Shakespearian comedy
The National Players will present a unique take on one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, “The Taming of the Shrew” Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre at Owens Community College’s Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

America’s longest running classical touring company, The National Players was founded in 1949 with the overall commitment to supporting young theatrical talent and celebrating the world’s greatest dramatic literature. Comprised of young professional actors, the company travels throughout the country, performing two plays in repertory, which includes a Shakespearean play and dramatic classic.

The performers adhere to strict traditions of touring theatre. Company members not only perform multiple roles, but also technical assignments ranging from lighting to set-up.

The theatre group’s unique take on the timeless “The Taming of the Shrew” will be set in the western frontier.

Youth pheasant hunt
Oak Harbor Conservation and Erie, Ottawa, Sandusky Pheasants Forever will co-sponsor the 5th Annual Youth Pheasant Hunt Oct. 2 at the Oak Harbor Conservation Club, N. Toussaint Road, Oak Harbor.

The Youth Pheasant Hunt, which will follow the Conservation Club’s morning Youth Waterfowl Hunt, will start with lunch at 11 a.m. After a discussion about hunting safety, young hunters will be exposed to all elements of an upland bird hunt.

Youth participants must be 10-17 years old, have a valid 2011-12 Youth Hunting License and be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.

Hydrant flushing set
From Sept. 19 through Oct. 23, the Northwestern Water and Sewer District’s Maintenance Department will be flushing and testing fire hydrants in the area of Lake Township (served by Oregon water), parts of Northwood and the Village of Millbury.

Specifically, this area is bounded by the Wood County line to the north and east, Drouillard Road and I-280 to the west and south to the Village of Millbury at SR 795. Testing will be performed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Residents may experience rusty water during this period and should run tap water before using water for laundry purposes. For those who need them, rust-removing chemicals may be obtained at the NWSD office, 12560 Middleton Pike, Bowling Green, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fall plant sale
Owens Community College’s Landscape and Turfgrass Crew Club will hold a Fall Plant Sale Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next to the greenhouse, located near the entrance to the Math/Science Center on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township.

The sale will feature a wide selection of shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, and rare and unusual trees, among other items. A complete listing of the available plants with their prices is available online at www.owens.edu/direct/plantsale.pdf

All proceeds from the plant sale will help support the organization’s participation in the PLANET (Professional Landcare Network) Student Career Days – a national horticultural and landscape competition involving colleges and universities across the country.

Volunteer Action Fair
Area residents are invited to learn about the many opportunities available to give back to the community at a Volunteer Action Fair Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Owens Community College’s Student Health and Activities Center.

Admission is free. Throughout the event, local community outreach representatives will be available to discuss volunteer opportunities available through their organizations.

Area organizations in attendance will include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo, YWCA of Greater Toledo, Nature’s Nursery, Camp Courageous, Polly Fox Academy, Victory Center Kitchen for the Poor, Toledo GROWs, Wood County Park District, Mobile Meals of Toledo, Cherry Street Mission Ministries and the Anne Grady Center, among many others.

College Preview Night
The third annual Fifth Third Bank College Preview Night, presented in partnership with BCSN and hosted at Fifth Third Field, will be held Sept. 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The free event is geared toward high school juniors and seniors and their parents.

More than 25 colleges and universities will be positioned on the concourse, offering materials and answering questions about admissions, financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

The U.S. Army is returning, two cosmetology schools have signed on and Healing Arts Institute will be represented. A highlight of the event for parents is the series of small group sessions specific to student financial aid at 5:30, 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m.

The evening will culminate with a drawing for three $1,000 scholarships provided by Fifth Third Bank. Entry forms will be available on site. The drawing will take place at 7:30 p.m. and winners must be present. Lourdes University will also award a $1,500 scholarship that evening.

Chili  & Soup Supper
The Elmore Kiwanis will hold their annual Chili & Soup Supper Sept. 30 before the Woodmore v. Fostoria football game.

The supper, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Woodmore High School cafeteria, will feature the Kiwanis’ famous chili, a selection of homemade soups and dessert.

Meals are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children under 12. Carryouts will also be available. Proceeds raised from the event will help fund the Kiwanis’ service projects, including Christmas fruit baskets, a scholarship, after-prom activities and other outreach programs. In addition, the Kiwanis sponsor the Woodmore Key Club and a local Boy Scout troop.


Civil War exhibit
The Elmore and Genoa libraries will be displaying “Ohio’s Role in the Civil War,” a traveling exhibit from the American Civil War Museum of Ohio.

The display, which contains artifacts and reproduction clothing, will be at the Elmore Library through Sept. 24 and at the Genoa Library Sept. 26 to Oct. 8. The exhibit is suitable for all ages.
