Microsoft Office seminar
The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce will present a free seminar designed to help Microsoft Office users get the most from the software in their work environments.

The program, which will be held Aug. 24 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Ottawa County Improvement Corporation, will focus on Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 and will be presented by a Certified Microsoft Technology Partner.

Participants will learn how to get through everyday tasks more quickly; overcome email overload; create professional documents and presentations with more impact and easily connect and share with customers and colleagues

Adult ed signups
Registration is under way for Penta Career Center’s full- and part-time Adult and Continuing Education programs.

Full-time programs begin Aug. 15. Program offerings include Auto Body Collision Repair; Automotive Technologies; Builder, Contractor and Remodeler Technologies; Business Administration; Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R); and Welding.

Penta also offers courses in the health occupations area and include job-training programs in Dietary Management and State Certified Nurse Aide (STNA).

Many of the part-time courses have flexible starting dates. Adults interested in part-time training at Penta can register for several programs and courses such as Pharmacy Technician; Medical Coding; Computers; Small Engine Repair; Pressure Boiler Systems; and Builder, Contractor & Remodeler Technologies. Apprenticeship training is also available in areas such as Plumbing, Millwrights, and Machine Trades.

Adults who want to improve their reading, writing and math skills or study for the GED and/or the Compass/Accuplacer College Entrance exams can register for Penta’s Adult Basic Skills Enhancement programs offered at several locations in the community.

Ready, Set, Enroll
Those who want to attend Terra State Community College this fall but haven’t taken the steps to do so are invited to the final “Ready, Set, Enroll” event of the summer, set for Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Roy Klay Hall (Building A), Suite 100.

Attendees can be accepted, tested at the event. Compass placement testing will be given throughout the day, with the last testing beginning at 4 p.m. Information on transportation, financial aid and career services will also be available.

In addition, Eagle 99 will do a live remote on campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Chef Ed Logan from Taher Dining Services and the TerraVue Café will do a cooking demonstration.

Smart Money Choices
Personal financial planning will be the topic of a free Smart Money Choices Conference offered at Owens Community College Aug. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Audio/Visual Classroom Center.

Presented by the Ohio Treasurer Office, the event will address such topics as budgeting, consumer protection, credit and debt management, consumer fraud, estate planning, insurance, investments, children and money, programs to help Ohioans, retirement planning and Social Security. The conference will include an opening session, panel discussion, breakout sessions taught by financial experts and a closing session. Additionally, conference participants will have the opportunity to visit with financial professionals and experts and ask questions specific to financial planning.

Boating course set
Western Lake Erie Safe Boating Council will sponsor a Boating Education Course Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cooley Canal Yacht Club, 12235 Bono Rd., Curtice.

Safe Boating Council members Mike Schabeck and Christopher Hoover will teach the course. The course fee is $35. Free lunch will be provided by the Yacht Club.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion from the State of Ohio issued after passing a short test. Topics to be discussed include navigational aids, personal watercraft, trailering and navigational “rules of the road.” Preregister by calling Mike at 419-460-4829 by Aug. 10. Softball tryouts
Oregon Hurricanes 16-U girls fastpitch softball tryouts will be held Aug. 14 from 4-7 p.m. at Oregon Rec diamonds 3 and 4.

Fee payment & Schedule pickup
Genoa High School has announced dates for fee payment and schedule pickup, along with freshman orientation for the upcoming school year.

Students in grades nine through 12 can pay fees, fill out emergency forms and pick up schedules Aug. 16 and 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Middle School library.

An informal orientation meeting for freshmen and their parents/guardians will be held Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Students will also be able to become familiar with their lockers and homerooms.

In addition, the 2012 Senior/Parent meeting will be held Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.


Eulberg to perform
Noted dulcimer player and folk musician Steve Eulberg is returning to Pemberville to help Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrate its 150th Anniversary Aug. 14th.

Eulberg will provide special music in worship during the 8 am service, offer an informal concert during breakfast at the American Legion Post #183 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and then provide special music for the 10:30 a.m. Community Worship Service.

“I am excited to return to my boyhood home once again and share the music, which has brought my life such meaning, with the people who helped to shape my identity,” he said from his Fort Collins, Colo. home. “I am also excited to have additional opportunities to teach and perform.”

Hosted by the Brickstreet Strummers, Eulberg will present mountain dulcimer workshops for people of all skill levels Saturday, Aug. 13 in the afternoon. At 7 p.m. there will be a concert in the historic Pemberville Opera House.
