Blood supply critically low The American Red Cross’ supply of type O negative blood has dropped to critically low levels.
Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.
Type O negative donors are needed now to help prevent the type O negative blood supply from declining further.
“The American Red Cross is reaching out to eligible blood donors, sponsors and community leaders to ask them to help recruit type O negative blood donations to help meet the needs of patients in our community,” said Annie Marckel, spokesperson for the American Red Cross Blood Services – Western Lake Erie Region.
Eligible blood donors are asked to call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive and to make an appointment.

1,100 families helped American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding for the Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) received by WSOS to assist residents in its service area has assisted more than 1,100 households, WSOS reports.
In a typical year, WSOS weatherizes approximately 220 homes per year in the six counties of Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa, Seneca, Erie and Huron. The ARRA funding nearly tripled that production level over the last two years, according to Ruthann House, Vice President.
HWAP is a federally funded, energy conservation program intended to help income-eligible residents make their homes more energy efficient. Services include home insulation, furnace repair or replacement and minor health and safety improvements offered at no cost to the householder. The program is available to both homeowners and renters. On average, HWAP cuts energy costs by 27 percent. The program assists residents whose incomes are up to 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.
The stimulus funds allowed WSOS to hire and train 34 employees into the positions of crew worker, crew leader, inspector, and support staff. Funding also provided for the purchase of trucks, equipment, tools, and materials necessary to complete the weatherization of area homes. The majority of these purchases were made within the WSOS service area and Ohio.
For an application or more information for weatherization services, call the WSOS Housing & Energy Department at 1-800-775-9767.
For more information about WSOS, visit www.wsos.org. Click on the red banner found on the home page to submit a pre-application for weatherization assistance.
