CHAMPS camp
Since 2006, the Choosing Hope and Moving Past Sadness (CHAMPS) program has provided resources and support to area children who have a loved one living with cancer.

The program is offered in two formats – a three-day summer camp for children ages 6 and up, and one-hour evening sessions for children and their parent or guardian. All sessions are free and led by licensed healthcare professionals.

This year’s CHAMPS day camp will be held June 21 to 23 at St. James Club, 7337 W. Bancroft St., Toledo. The camp offers a safe and nurturing environment where children meet and interact with peers facing similar circumstances, and can freely express their feelings about how cancer is impacting their family. Activities also include art therapy, swimming and other fun activities.

The evening program for children and their parent or caregiver will be offered on the following dates at the Hickman Cancer Center at Flower Hospital, 5200 Harroun Rd., Sylvania: Sept. 1, Oct. 6, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1. Children and adults meet in separate groups to discuss how to cope with their loved one’s illness and offer emotional support.

“The activities we plan all have a purpose. The main goal is to help participants explore coping strategies that work for them in their daily lives,” says Bonnie Gratop, ProMedica social worker. “Each year, I especially look forward to the camp where previous participants return to serve as volunteers to help others in need.”

Computer classes
The Birchard Public Library of Sandusky County is providing a new service designed to introduce basic computer skills to the 30 percent of adult residents of Sandusky County that do not have Internet access at home.

Through a partnership with Connect Ohio, the library is offering a series of four 90-minute classes that introduce attendees to topics including computer basics, how to access the Internet, useful websites, and how to use e-mail. The classes are part of the Every Citizen Online program, which is funded by a federal grant. Birchard Public Library is one of more than 100 libraries in Ohio partnering with Connect Ohio to encourage residents to learn how to use the Internet so they can take advantage of the vast array of services and information that are available online.

There is a class offered at the main library and a class at one of the branches in Gibsonburg, Woodville or Green Springs each month.

If you’re caught in the grip of a birding addiction, how do you explain that to someone you love – or to yourself? How do you make the lure of bird watching understandable for someone who has never tried it?

Kaufman will call on a host of his unusual friends – bikers, spies, monks, musicians, gourmet chefs, polar explorers, and more—to help him look at the questions and at the birds themselves, from a series of brand-new angles.

He is the originator of the Kaufman Field Guide series and author of Lives of North American Birds, Kingbird Highway and Flights Against the Sunset, among other books. A field editor for Audubon and a contributor to every major birding magazine, he has also led nature tours on all seven continents.
