Community day All Toledo area residents are invited to the Friendly Center Community Day on Saturday, May 14, at the Friendly Center, 1324 N. Superior St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a day of fun, free food and prizes.
There will be games and activities for children and adults, including face painting, balloons, clowns, coloring, crafts, hopscotch and four square for the kids. For adults, there is bingo, corn hole and ladder ball. Prizes and freebies from local companies and families will be handed out. Festivities also include a photo booth where families and friends can have digital photos taken.
Band forming An organizational meeting for musicians interested in joining the Elwood Community Band will be held May 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Woodville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 201 W. First St. Instruments and music will not be needed at this meeting.
The Elwood Community Band will be comprised primarily of people from Elmore and Woodville, but membership is open to musicians of all ages who want to join in the band’s mission – to make great music while having fun.
“We will primarily be playing the standard ‘community band’ fare of marches, patriotic and pops songs and some polkas, but hopefully we can mix it up with some fun arrangements of other types of music as well, maybe even break out a few smaller ensembles as time progresses, according to Grant Cummings, who is organizing the band.

Academy enrolling Students considering a career in law enforcement may enroll for fall semester at the Basic Peace Officer Academy Training Program at the Owens Community College Toledo-area Campus through June 27.
During the seven-month program, students will take courses in patrol operations, firearms, defensive tactics, criminal investigation, constitutional law and physical conditioning. Police officers, sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers, as well as state and federal agents provide instruction for students. The academy’s curriculum is approved by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission. Upon completion of the program, each student will receive a certificate. Coursework earned applies toward an associate degree at Owens in law enforcement.
The deadline for applications is June 24. Classes begin in August.

LCRTA luncheon The Lucas County Retired Teachers Association May Luncheon will be held May 25 at noon at the Toledo Country Club, 3949 River Rd.
The guest speaker will be singer/educator Eddie Boggs, who retired after 37 years as a teacher/counselor, and is currently touring as a member of the New Christy Minstrels.
LCRTA is collecting children’s books for donation to the Creating Young Readers Project. Those who would like to donate books but can’t attend the luncheon may call Nan Fetter at 419-885-1692 for donation information.

Penta Plant Sale Penta Career Center’s Floral Design & Greenhouse Production and Landscape & Turfgrass Management programs are currently sponsoring a Plant Sale in the greenhouse.
Hours are 9 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. weekdays. Mix-and-match flats, combination pots, hanging baskets, bedding plants, flowering pots, nursery plants, perennials and shrubs will be available to purchase.

125th anniversary St. Lucas Lutheran Church, 745 Walbridge Avenue, Toledo, is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The theme of this historical event is “125 Years of Welcoming You Home.”
St. Lucas was founded in 1886 in a German community in Toledo’s South End and today, the church continues to serve a diverse neighborhood and beyond.
In honor of the anniversary, several activities have been planned for May 13 through 15. On Friday at 7:30 p.m., a public concert of organ and choral music will be presented by Michael Schreffler, St. Lucas organist from 2003 to 2007. Schreffler will perform works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Smart and Guilmant on the St. Lucas 48-rank Möller-Teller organ. The Lourdes College Chorus, directed by Karen Thornton Biscay, associate professor of music, and Olga-Topuzova-Meade, accompanist, will perform music by Ames, Bruckner, Ferguson, Hovland and others, joined by the St. Lucas Choir.
On Saturday, a festival will be held from noon to 8 p.m. A number of family-friendly activities are planned, including games, an obstacle course, vendor booths, food, music and shopping in the thrift shop.
The celebration continues with a Festive Worship Sunday 10 a.m., followed by dinner.

Career workshop set The Business Technology Department of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will present a free career workshop May 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oregon Branch Library, 3340 Dustin Rd.
Speaker Ray Nissen will discuss how to succeed in starting a business or accomplishing any personal or educational goal.

Oregon Safety Town Registration is currently being accepted for Oregon Safety Town, a safety program for children entering kindergarten.
Safety Town will be held June 14 to 24 at Starr Elementary School. Sessions will run 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.
Registration forms are available at the Oregon Branch Library, 3340 Dustin Rd. Children need not be Oregon residents to attend.
Walk on the Wildside Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with a one- or two-mile “Walk on the Wildside” at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area May 14.
Participants can check in at the tent and begin their walk any time between 9:30 a.m. and noon. Funds raised from the event will be used to support the “Weeds to Wildflowers” conservation project, which involves replacing invasive garlic mustard with native plants.

Tree City The City of Oregon has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA. This is the 17th consecutive year Oregon has earned the distinction.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
Oregon has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community – having a board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Walleye Drop fundraiser Port Clinton’s Walleye Drop Committee is hosting a fundraiser for the 2011 New Year’s Eve Walleye Drop May 13 at Mango Mama’s.
The evening will start with a Kid’s Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Kids will enjoy Music by DJ Kita, photos ops with the Toledo Walleye mascots and Port Clinton’s own Walleye Drop mascot, Wylie. There will also be face painting, hot dogs, chips, ice cream and popcorn sampling. Each child attending will be entered to win a gift basket from local businesses valued over $200.00. Admission is $2 per child. Adults are free. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., parents will have the opportunity to have a caricature of their children created by Jodie Fleming for $5.
Starting at 8 p.m. the fundraiser transforms into a rock and roll evening for adults, featuring live entertainment provided by Snake Eyes, raffles and more.

Tornado memorial Events to mark the one-year anniversary of the tornado which caused seven deaths and millions of dollars in damage last June have been scheduled in Lake Township.
Area churches will sponsor a memorial service in Friendship Park on June 5 beginning at 2 p.m.
An open house and memorial ceremony to coincide with the re-opening of the township administration building will start the same day at 3 p.m.
A 5 kilometer run in memory of Ryan, Mary, and Hayden Walters will be held June 4. It will start at Lake Township Fire Station 2, Ayers Road. Race day registration begins at 6:30 a.m.
