Genealogy class The Hayes Presidential Center will offer an Internet Genealogy I Class Feb. 12 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Hayes Research Library.
Head Librarian Becky Hill will lead the class, which is sponsored by RootsMagic™. Participants will learn how to use free genealogical websites to research family history.

Help still available Meetings of the Lake Township long-term tornado recovery committee are transitioning to a new phase.
“The majority of funds have been distributed,” said Michael George, director of United Way in Wood County and outgoing committee chair, “the distribution center for goods has closed, and survivors’ immediate and short-term needs have been addressed to the best of our ability.”
The committee reports more than $270,000 was raised and distributed to survivors.
The committee will continue to meet and there will still be help available for those who come forward with appropriate needs. Ron Sims, Lake Township Trustee, will take over as the committee chair.
Residents can dial United Way 2-1-1 to get connected not only to tornado needs, but any health or human service resource in the community.
Airman to speak Dr. Harold H. Brown, of Port Clinton, who was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, will be the featured speaker Feb. 10 at a Black History Month celebration at Terra Community College.
The Tuskegee Airmen were America’s first African-American pilots and are believed to be the only combat group to never lose a bomber in action. These men endured discrimination in virtually every aspect of their military careers, yet went on to great fame based on their achievements in battle.
By the end of the war, white bomber pilots requested that they be accompanied by this elite group of men.
Brown, along with his fellow Tuskegee Airmen, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in Washington, D.C. in March of 2007.
The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Activities Center at Terra, 2830 Napoleon Road, Fremont. The Terra Jazz Band will perform and refreshments will be served.

Housekeeping/chore services The East Toledo Senior Activities Center is accepting names for senior citizens interested in signing up for Housekeeping and/or Chore Services.
The Housekeeping program includes light housekeeping such as dusting, vacuuming, dishes, laundry, cleaning bathrooms, etc.
The Chore program includes grass-cutting, trimming, hedge trimming, weeding, leaf-raking and some painting.
Programs are open to seniors age 60 and older who live in East Toledo or Oregon.

Disaster training The Ottawa County District Office of the American Red Cross will offer disaster services training opportunities Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p .m. at the Allen-Clay Joint Fire District Office, 3155 N. Genoa-Clay Center Rd., Genoa.
Training includes: • Disaster Services: An Overview, a prerequisite to all other authorized Red Cross disaster courses. The course includes fundamental information about disasters, their effects on individuals and the community, the role of government agencies, Red Cross and other agencies, and how the Red Cross provides disaster relief. Upon completion, participants will also be able to identify resources for personal preparedness, determine how to help their community prepare, respond to disasters, and identify the next steps to becoming a volunteer.
• Shelter Operations/Simulation, (prerequisite: Disaster Services: An Overview), a course that prepares Red Cross paid and volunteer staff to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team and meet the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.

College Goal Sunday Owens Community College and Terra Community College will host the statewide college financial aid event “College Goal Sunday” (CGS) on Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as the need-based state grants.
