Flu shot clinic
Toledo/Lucas County CareNet, in partnership with its partner organizations, will host a free flu shot clinic for CareNet members and local residents who are uninsured Dec. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the East Toledo Family Center, located at 1020 Varland Ave,, Toledo.

Supplies are limited and shots will be provided on a first come first serve basis.

Toledo/Lucas County CareNet coordinates healthcare services for Lucas County residents who are uninsured, not eligible for public or private health insurance and have household incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, which for a family of two is $29,140.

Among the organizations donating flu shots and supplies for this event are the East Toledo Family Center, ProMedica Health System, Mercy, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, the Pharmacy Counter, Kroger Pharmacy and United Way of Greater Toledo.

WSOS holiday hours
WSOS offices will be closed Dec. 24 through Dec. 31 to walk-in clients; however, all critical services will be maintained, including heating assistance through the Emergency Home energy Assistance Program (EHEAP), transportation (TRIPS) and meals to homebound seniors. All WSOS senior centers will remain open as well.

Anyone experiencing an emergency should call 1-800-775-9767. Those with emergency heating problems should call 1-888-441-4327. A WSOS staff member will respond to all messages within 24 hours.

All offices will reopen at 9 a.m. January 3.


Chicks for Charity
Chicks for Charity, a group of Toledo-area women and girls of all ages who have a desire to give back to the local community, have selected the International Boxing Club (IBC) as their 2011-2012 charitable recipient.

“We are excited to announce that Chicks for Charity will be supporting another area organization – the International Boxing Club – to raise awareness and ultimately money to help meet the emerging needs of at-risk youths in Toledo,” said Martha Vetter, founder of Chicks for Charity. “We will truly miss working with The Victory Center, but are very excited and proud to have raised more than $143,000 for them during the past two years.”

IBC provides programs that benefit more than 4,000 youths in the greater Toledo area. Programs are offered at no cost, eliminating financial burdens for families and giving the youth in our community a place to go for fun and friendship.
 

Youth pottery classes
The 577 Foundation, located at 577 East Front Street in Perrysburg, will offer youth pottery classes for children in third through fifth grades and also children in grades six to 12.

Children in third through fifth grade will learn the basics of hand building and explore the potter’s wheel. They will also learn about glazing while finishing their pieces with high and low fire glazes.

Children in sixth through 12th grade will focus on developing their creative side in many hand built and wheel projects. The course will feature extruded work, slab work and development of potter’s wheel skills. They will glaze their work and get an understanding of how it is fired.

The six-week classes will begin Jan. 12 and run through Feb. 16. Third through fifth grades will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and the fee is $65 per child. Sixth through 12th grades will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. The fee is $75 per child. Pre-payment is required. Pre-register by calling 419-874-4174 or register online at www.577foundation.org.


Women’s Connection
All area women are invited to attend the Ties to the Past Luncheon and program sponsored by the Toledo East Women’s Connection Jan. 13 at the Bayside Boardwalk, 2759 Seaman St., Oregon.

Doors will open at 11:10 a.m. for the noon buffet and program, which will include a presentation by apron collector Betty Metz, vocal music by Lisa Feather, of Northwood and featured speaker Mary Haddad, from Adrian, Mich., who will discuss “Survival and Success in the Search for Significance.”

Grant awarded
Bittersweet, Inc., received a $25,000 grant from the Board of Trustees of Toledo Community Foundation, Inc., to expand the services for children with autism that are offered at the Pemberville facility.

Grants from the foundation’s unrestricted funds are considered three times annually, and are awarded to non-profit charitable organizations.
