Sunsets on the bay A “Sunsets on the Bay” meeting will be held at the Oregon Senior Center on Bay Shore Road at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Sunsets on the Bay, which starts July 17, will be held for seven Fridays from 6 p.m. to sunset along Bay Shore Road. The purpose of the events is to enjoy Oregon’s waterfront on the bay. The evenings will include crafters, music and food. On August 7, there will be a waterfront garage sale along the whole length of Bay Shore Road in Oregon, and north of Cedar Point Road, for anyone interested in holding garage sales.
The Ultimate Cheapskate Jeff Yeager, aka “The Ultimate Cheapskate,” will be at the Wood County District Public Library, 251 N. Main St., Bowling Green, June 14 at 7 p.m.
Yeager, a frequent contributor to “The Today Show,” grew up in Wood County, attended Otsego High School and graduated summa cum laude from Bowling Green State University.
WCDPL is the first stop on Yeager’s national tour to promote his new book, “The Cheapskate Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of Americans Living Happily Below Their Means.” Yeager specializes in an offbeat blend of original humor and practical advice of living a better life by spending and consuming less.

LSP golf outing The Little Sisters of the Poor will host their Annual Golf Outing July 16 at Eagles Landing Golf Course in Oregon.
The event will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided from 11:30 a.m. to noon, and a chicken and ribs dinner will be held following the outing in the evening.
The cost is $100 per golfer. The cost for those wishing to attend the dinner and cocktail hour is $25. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Party with a Purpose ZOOtoDO, a black-tie fundraiser with The Toledo Zoo twist, will be held June 18 at the zoo.
The elegant evening of food, live music and good company, will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the zoo’s Africa! Overlook, then progresses to the zoo’s historic side for a sophisticated evening of grown-up fun from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
Revenues from ZOOtoDO directly support the continued development of the zoo’s programs and exhibits. Tickets are $150 per person and must be purchased in advance. A slice of history Rex Rideout, proprietor of Time Travel Music, will offer a slice of history in a performance June 19, at 8 p.m. at the Pemberville Opera House.
Rex sings of the American West, from the times of the early explorers, the fur trade, the Civil War and the cattle drive era to the end of the 19th century. As the proprietor of Time Travel Music, he has performed at countless historic sites and museums across the West playing mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and tin whistle, among other instruments. His music has been featured on television and radio programs, at museums like the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the Denver Art Museum, as well as on the soundtracks of three National Park Service visitor center films.
Raised in Pemberville, Rex Rideout’s interest was sparked by the Scottish and German craftsmen of the community and he has studied the trades and skills of the 19th century for more than 25 years. Come and see a slice of history!

Support for dads Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) and its Diversity Advisory Committee are holding a “Fatherhood Town Hall: Bringing Back the Dads,” June 18 at 7 p.m. at New Covenant Baptist Church, 3862 Jackman Rd. in Toledo. “We’re holding this town hall to inspire men who have been absent in their children’s lives to step up and become involved fathers,” said Marjorie Holt, Ph.D., LCCS Minority Affairs and Inclusion Coordinator.
The keynote speaker will be Ron Tijerina, of the Ridge Project, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 2001 and dedicated to serving the youths and families of Ohio. Other topics for discussion will include community resources available to support fathers interested in parenting their children, and pending state and national legislation. The event, which is free, will also feature music and entertainment, including performances by a local drum corps.
Summer cooling help The 2010 Summer Cooling Program operated by WSOS will begin July 1 and continue through Aug. 31, or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
The program provides eligible residents in Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa and Seneca counties with up to $175 in assistance to pay their electric bills. It is open to income-eligible residents who have a medical condition verified by a doctor where electricity is a necessity; who have a resident 60 years of age or over in the household or a combination of those eligibility requirements.
In addition, Emergency Services program continues to certify residents for enrollment in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) for customers of Columbia Gas, the American Electric Power Company, Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison and Suburban Gas.

Croquet anyone? Learn how to play Golf Croquet and meet the members of the Hayes Presidential Center Croquet Club during the club’s Family Day June 13 beginning at 2 p.m. on the lawn in front of the home of 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Not only is Family Day free and open to all, the Croquet Club members will treat all participants to snacks and refreshments following play.
The Hayes Croquet Club is sanctioned by the U.S. Croquet Association. Club tournaments are held twice a month, April through September. Membership dues are $25 per person or $40 per couple. Club members are free to use the center’s croquet courts and equipment at any time.

Owens names president Owens Community College Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Larry G. McDougle to serve as the academic institution’s new President.
Dr. McDougle has been serving as the college’s interim president since January of this year.
The Board of Trustees approved Dr. McDougle’s appointment as the fifth President in the 45-year history of Owens Community College during their regular June meeting. Both the Board of Trustees and Dr. McDougle have agreed to a one-year contract.
According to Board of Trustees Chair Dee Talmage, the Presidential Search Committee was planning to reconvene in June to review additional applications, however, after receiving overwhelming feedback from the college’s campus community as well as community members in support of Dr. McDougle and his leadership, the decision was made to end the search.
Splash into reading The Walbridge Branch Library launched the 2010 Summer Reading Program, “Make a Splash – Read.”
The program, intended to encourage toddlers through young adults to explore the world of water through fun events and activities about oceans, rivers, lakes and pools and the creatures that live there.
Every Wednesday, families are invited to the library for the “Riptide Reading Club,” to register points, win prizes and find interesting books. Every other Tuesday afternoon, families are invited to enjoy water-themed movies.
Ventriloquist Mark Wade will bring his “Oceans of Fun Library Show” to the Walbridge Branch June 17 at 2 p.m. All programs are free of charge, made possible through donations from local businesses and volunteers.
The library is also partnering with the Walbridge Pool for programs sure to “make a splash” this summer, including a “Splash Bash” July 22.

Counterfeit $20 bills passed On June 4, officers from the Northwood Police Department responded to numerous complaints of subjects passing counterfeit $20 bills at garage sales throughout the city.
Police were able to locate two suspects as they were attempting to pass counterfeit currency at a fifth garage sale and took these two suspects into custody.
Arrested were Charles W. Metzler, 47, of 1136 Earl St., Toledo, and Brandy N. Coleman, 26, of the same address. Both suspects were booked into the Wood County Justice Center after being able to post $5,000 bond, with 10 Percent allowed.
Northwood Police are working with the U.S. Secret Service to identify other victims of the counterfeiting operation. Those who feel they may have been victims are urged to call the police at 419-691-5053.
