The Master Gardeners of Sandusky and Ottawa counties have been informed by Don Edwards, president of PIPO, Inc., that his company will no longer be able to participate in the horticultural plastic recycling project started this spring by the Master Gardeners.
According to Edwards, “It is not profitable for PIPO to transport the plastic from the collection sites throughout Sandusky and Ottawa counties to Norwalk because of a 75 percent drop in the price of plastic within the last year.”
The Master Gardeners expressed their gratitude to local businesses for participating in the project, including Bench Farms, Curtice; Bench’s Greenhouse, Elmore; and Stoney Acres Farms, Helena.
Since public interest in the recycling effort was tremendous, the Master Gardeners will continue to investigate the possibility of partnering with another vendor to resume the collection of plastic in the near future.
