Thorbahn re-elected
Rich Thorbahn was recently re-elected to the Board of Supervisors of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD).

Thorbahn was sworn into office by Judge Frederick Hany II at the board’s January meeting. He joins Chairman Jerry Whipple; Vice Chairman Roland Sandrock; Tom Riedeman, fiscal agent and Mike Harder, secretary on the board.

Together they direct the district staff in carrying out the conservation of natural resources through assisting landowners, both urban and rural, throughout Ottawa County.

Century Farms recognized
Seventy-eight farms were designated as Ohio Century Farms in 2012 by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The status is awarded to families who have owned the same farm for at least 100 consecutive years. To commemorate the milestone, each family received a certificate signed by Gov. John Kasich and the director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Corn & soybean loan provisions
With the 2012 harvest nearly complete, the Farm Service Agency is reminding producers of their options to obtain a Marketing Assistance Loan for 2012 crop corn and soybeans. For the 2012 crop year, the corn and soybean loan rates are $1.92 and $5.11 per bushel respectively. The loan program provides growers with cash flow while the crop is in storage on the farm or at a local elevator. The November 2012 interest rate was 1.125 percent.
