Friend of the district

At the recent Annual Meeting and Banquet, the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District recognized the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge as a “Friend of the District.”

The award is given to an organization, business or individual that is “conservation and agriculture minded.” The refuge was lauded for its support of the Annual 5th Grade Conservation Field Day, other educational workshops and meetings that the district holds, and the newest endeavor, Phragmites Control Program.

Leah C. Dorman, DVM, director of food programs, Center for Food and Animal Issues at the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, will present “We’re not in Kansas Any More: Animal Rights versus Animal Welfare” Oct. 21 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the monthly Northwest Ohio Ag-Business Breakfast Forum.

The program begins at 8 a.m. with informal networking prior, hosted by the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) at the Agricultural Incubator Foundation, north of Bowling Green.

The breakfast forum is an educational networking opportunity designed to provide information on current issues, trends and programs available to the agricultural community and those who support its advancement. Farmers, agribusiness owners and supporters of Ohio’s agricultural economy are invited to attend the events, held the third Thursday every month.

The cost is $10 per person (cash or check at the door), which includes breakfast and informal networking opportunities.

 
Fish sale deadline

The deadline for ordering in the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation’s Fish Sale is Oct. 1.

Fish available include bluegill, channel catfish, fathead minnows, largemouth bass, redear sunfish and white amur. The supplier, Fender’s Fish Hatchery, of Baltic, Ohio, will deliver the fish orders Oct. 7.

All fish must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. To obtain an order form, call 419-898-1595 visit the district office at 240 W. Lake St., Oak Harbor.
