Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District “Women in Conservation Series” will be held in various locations throughout the county the third Wednesday of the month May through September.
The first workshop will be May 16 at the Winous Point Marsh Conservancy in Port Clinton, the location of the oldest hunt club in America. Tom Kashmer, a bird researcher that has banded over 100,000 birds, will lead the group on a bird tour through different habitats ranging from forest to marsh.
The topics and dates for future sessions include:
• June 20: Shooting /Archery at Oak Harbor Conservation Club;
• July 18: Wild game cooking and wine tasting at Winous Point Marsh Conservancy;
• August 15: Pressed flowers at Schedel Gardens;
• Sept. 19: Life in the marsh at Winous Point Marsh Conservancy.
Each session will provide food, an opportunity to talk with experts, networking with other women interested in the outdoors and fun.

Wildlife Food Plots
The Ottawa County Soil and Water Conservation District encourages landowners who want to see more wildlife on their property to plant and maintain wildlife food plots.
Food plots improve hunting and viewing by helping attract deer, ducks, turkey and pheasants. They also provide critical habitats for many species of wildlife.
Wildlife have four basic requirements for survival – food, water, shelter and space. Because establishing and maintaining wildlife food plots can be expensive and requires some knowledge of planting and how to properly use farm equipment, the District offers wildlife food plot planting for the 2012 season.
Landowners can start farming for wildlife for a minimal amount of $60 per acre. The District will plant wildlife food plots consisting of a choice of corn, beans, sorghum, sunflowers, buckwheat and millet.

Ron Laubacher, of Oak Harbor, was the winner in a contest sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Co., and has donated his prize of $2,500 to the Ottawa County Jr. Fair Livestock Sale Committee.
Grow Communities, sponsored by Monsanto, offers growers the opportunity to win the prize for their favorite non-profit organization.
Laubacher presented the donation to the livestock sale committee April 2 at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds.
Open house set
The Lucas Soil & Water Conservation District will host a Backyard Conservation Open House May 4 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at their office, 130 W. Dudley St., Maumee.
Items for sale include raised bed garden frames, composters, rain barrels, bird and bat houses and native perennial plants. Experts will be on hand to answer related questions and provide information.

Country Slickers officers installed
The Ottawa county Country Slickers 4-H club held an installation of officers March 11 at Trinity U.C.C in Elliston.
Judge Kathy Giesler installed the officers, which included Tori Allen, president; Brandon Schimming, vice president; Kelsey Schimming, secretary; Abby David, news reporter; Tad Jenson, safety officer; Rebekah Perry, health officer; and Hannah Follman and Olivia Jenson, recreation leaders.
Monthly Ag forum
Jessica Nagel, agriculture project specialist, Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities, will educate and prepare those looking to join or start a Community Supported Agriculture program during a presentation at the monthly Northwest Ohio Ag-Business Breakfast Forum May 17 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Agricultural Incubator Foundation is located at 13737 Middleton Pike (SR 582) in Bowling Green.
Nagel’s presentation, “Community Supported Agriculture: Connecting the Producer and Consumer” will begin at 8 a.m. Informal networking will be held prior, hosted by the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT).
The Northwest Ohio Ag-Business Breakfast Forum is an educational networking opportunity that provides information on current issues, trends and programs available to the agricultural community and those who support its advancement. Farmers, agribusiness owners and supporters of Ohio’s agricultural economy are encouraged to join CIFT on the third Thursday every month for this forum.
