YF fundraiser set
The Oak Harbor Young Farmer Chapter is sponsoring a Chicken BBQ Dinner Feb. 24 in the Oak Harbor High School cafeteria.
The dinner will include quarter chicken, baked potato, green beans, roll & butter and a drink. Tickets are $8 and are available through Feb. 20 from any Young Farmer member or call Louis Damschroder at 419-898-5440.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help the Holiday Bureau, sponsor an Easter Ham Give Away program, and promote youth activities. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Ottawa County Chapter #30011 is cooperating with the event.
The event replaces the annual YF Consignment Sale that has been held at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds for the past 36 years.
Registration for the 2012 Direct and Counter Cyclical Program (DCP) will run through June 1, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has announced.
Farmers enrolled in the 2012 DCP will not have the option to receive an Advance Direct Payment. In previous years, producers could elect to receive a 22 percent Advance Direct Payment at sign up. Provisions in the 2008 Farm Bill eliminated Advance Payments for the 2012 crop year only.
For the 2012 crop year, all of the Direct Payment will be issued to farm producers in October 2012. The 2012 Direct Payment will be as follows: corn at 28 cents per bushel; soybeans at 44 cents and wheat at 52 cents.
Producers should contact the Sandusky County Farm Service Agency office to schedule an appointment. In Sandusky County, call 419-334-6330, ext. 2; in Lucas/Ottawa County, call 419-898-2651 and in Wood County, call 419-352-5171.
Ohio food producers looking to sell through different marketing channels are invited to attend a MarketReady training program Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) office, 5555 Airport Hwy., Ste. 100, Toledo.
The daylong workshop teaches what is required to sell to grocers, restaurants, consumers and other wholesale buyers. In addition, local producers, wholesalers and buyers will participate on a panel to provide insight on requirements for purchasing product.
The cost is $75 per person and $25 for each additional person from the same business, which includes materials, lunch and morning refreshments.
