Overmyer named Cooperator
The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District recognized LJ Overmyer, of Harris Township, as the 2009 “Cooperator of the Year.”

The award is presented based on conservation practices and a continuous demonstration of protecting natural resources.

He received the honor at the district’s 58th Annual Meeting and Banquet. In presenting the award, Rich Thorbahn, soil and water conservation district chairman, said, “LJ is one of those farmers who puts conservation on the land with extreme detail and promptness.”

Overmyer first visited the district office in 2006 with an interest in converting his 56 acres from cropland to grass and hay land for his 30 head of “Belted Galloway” beef cattle. Since that time, the district has written a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan; drawn up engineering plans for both a 45 x 80 beef cow manure storage facility for winter months and a 60 x 80 gravel heavy use are for winter confinement feeding. Most recently Overmyer has applied to build a 20 x 24 horse manure storage facility.
