The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the final certification date for reporting planted crop acreage to Aug. 14.

Because of extreme weather conditions across portions of the U.S., many producers have not filed a 2009 acreage report. Prior to the extension, producers were required to report small gains by June 30, 2009 and all other crops by July 15.

The extension of the certification date to Aug. 14 provides producers additional time to report their planted acreage, which is a requirement to obtain benefits for most Farm Service Agency Programs,” said W. Todd Warner, county executive director of the Sandusky County Farm Service Agency.

“To date, Sandusky County producers have reported over 112,000 acres of planted crops to the Farm Service Agency, which is 62 percent of the normal 181,000 acres reported to our office.”

Sandusky County producers plant, on average, 62,700 acres of corn, 83,700 acres of soybeans and 19,700 acres of wheat. Producers are requested to report their acreage to the Sandusky County FSA by appointment, which may be scheduled by calling 419-334-6330, ext. 2. Producers not reporting their planted crops by the Aug. 14 deadline may late file if they pay the required late fee.

Committee elections
The Sandusky County Farm Service Agency has announced that the 2009 County Committee Election process is now open.

Local Administrative Area (LAA) 3, which includes Green Creek, Townsend, York and Riley townships in Sandusky County, will elect a new member to the Sandusky County FSA Committee for the term beginning January 2010.

Current County Commissioner member LaVerde Kuns, Green Creek Township, has served the maximum three consecutive terms and is not eligible for re-election.

Farm operators, producers in LAA 3 are eligible if they participate or cooperate in Farm Service Agency programs.

To be nominated as a candidate, nominees must submit form FSA-699A to the Sandusky County FSA office by Aug. 3.

The Farm Service Agency County Committee meets once per month for approximately four hours to review and approve a variety of program applications, set program policy and carry out other duties of the County Committee according to USDA program procedure. Committee members are paid an hourly wage and receive reimbursement for mileage when attending a meeting.
