Bridge repair bids rejected

The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners has rejected all bids for upgrading a steel bridge on Billman Road over Cedar Creek in Allen Township.

The commissioners followed the recommendation of the county engineer’s office, which determined there were errors in unit pricing in all bids that would place the bids beyond the acceptable limit of the engineer’s estimate.

The project will be re-bid.

Fund transfer
Burial fees and plot sales at the Lake Township Cemetery have dropped to the point the township trustees last week passed a resolution transferring $15,000 from the general fund to the cemetery account for maintenance and related expenses.

The trustees also authorized the rehiring of George Crews as a seasonal worker at the cemetery for $10 an hour to cut grass, foundation work, and spring clean-up.

Melanie Bowen, who chairs the board of trustees, said Crews is returning to work about one month later than usual and may be the only seasonal worker the township hires this year for the cemetery.

The township doesn’t have a property tax issue to financially support the cemetery, relying instead on fees and plot sales.
