Fire-fighters get pay increase Several fire department matters were approved Tuesday by the Lake Township trustees.
Following negotiations with a committee representing fire-fighters, the trustees agreed to a recommendation by Fire Chief Todd Walters to increase compensation for members of the fire department by $1 per point.
Under the point system, a point represents approximately one hour of service, chief Walters said.
The increase doesn’t include the chief and deputy chief.
The trustees said it is the first pay increase for department members in five years.
The trustees also approved recommendations from department heads to promote Ray Lee to assistant district chief at station one.
The promotion went into effect March 16 and Lee will have a one-year probationary period.
After department members offered their congratulations to Lee, another fire-fighter was recognized for 50 years of service.
Dennis “Pinky” Traver was presented with a plaque for his service to the department. A cake was also served in his honor.

Project deadline Project proposals for reducing pollution and improving water quality are due May 7, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has announced.
The EPA estimates about $3 million in grants will be distributed later this year for eligible projects.
Applicants may seek up to $500,000. The required local share has been reduced to 20 percent of the project costs from 40 percent, according to an agreement with the EPA’s Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program.
Eligible projects include stream and wetland restoration, inland lake management and restoration, riparian restoration, wetland protection, and agriculture management practices.
The goal, said EPA director Chris Korleski, is to improve waterways where non-point source pollution impairs aquatic life.
Applications are available through the EPA’s district offices or by contacting Russ Gibson at (614) 644-2020 or Martha Spurbeck at (614) 644-2869.
