Updated flood insurance rate maps for Sandusky County will be available for public viewing Nov. 19 from 4-7 p.m. at the county service center, 2511 Countryside Dr.
John Willey, executive director of the Sandusky County Regional Planning Commission, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has, with input from local officials, completed preliminary floodplain maps of the county that are more accurate than previous maps.
In some cases, lenders require home buyers to have flood insurance if a home or other structure is located in a flood plain.
Representatives of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will be at the workshop along with the contracting company which prepared the maps for FEMA.
Willey said the updated maps may also be viewed online at the county Web site and at the planning commission office, 606 W. State St., Fremont.

Annexation turned down Elmore Village Council has voted to not approve the annexation of 36.12 acres in Harris Township into the village. The Schedel Foundation – which operates the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens – had requested the annexation as a means to receive sewer service from the village.
The village has extended sewer lines to the property and will continue to provide the service to the site, but council last week decided to not proceed with the annexation after Ottawa County officials included a provision for the village to assume responsibility of a county road leading to the site.
Council, in a 4-1 vote, opted to forgo annexing the property because of the expenses involved in maintaining the road, said Rick Claar, a member of council.
Revenues for the sewer service and any income taxes from employees of the arboretum would have been exceeded by expenses for maintaining the road, he said.
