A groundbreaking ceremony for a new elementary school building in the Genoa district is planned for Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m.
The ceremony will be held at the campus on Genoa-Clay Center Road.
Genoa voters last November approved a 1.9-mill, 28-year bond issue to fund the local share of construction costs for the new elementary school building and renovations to the high school.
The bond issue is generating about $5.23 million for the project, which will also be funded by $13.7 million from the Ohio School Facilities Commission and a $6.2 million credit the Genoa district has with the OSFC.
The new elementary building will house kindergarten through the fifth grade and be located on a 60-acre parcel west of the district administration building and south of the football stadium.
Planned renovations for the high school include a new roof, upgrading of the electrical system, and new restrooms at the stadium.
Woodmore board meeting The Woodmore school board will hold its next regular meeting Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary school music room.
A meeting to discuss the bond issue on the November ballot will be held after the regular meeting.
Both meetings are open to the public.
The board has approved a resolution to place a bond issue on the November ballot that would leverage state funding to help pay for the construction of a new elementary building.
The resolution authorizes the district to issue bonds totaling about $19.5 million to be used for construction costs and to levy an additional 0.5-mill property tax that would be used for permanent improvement expenses if the new school is built.
If Woodmore voters support the local funding issue, the Ohio School Facilities Commission will provide funding for the balance of construction costs, which are estimated at $25.9 million.
The district is proposing to replace Woodmore Elementary School in Woodville and a wing of the high school in Elmore that houses grades seven and eight. The new school, which would be constructed near the current elementary building in Woodville, would include pre-kindergarten classes.
Safety council The Ottawa County Safety Council will meet Sept. 16 at the Ottawa County Resource Centre, 8043 W. State Route 163.
A human resource focus group will meet from 10-11 a.m. and lunch will be from 11-11:30 a.m. A speaker from the Red Cross will discuss prevention of disease transmission after lunch.
