Area law enforcement departments will be participating in a nationwide crackdown on impaired drivers called: Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

The special enforcement effort began Aug. 21 and continues until Sept. 7.

An $11 million national advertising campaign will publicize the program, which is organized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“We will be out in force conducting saturation patrols to get drunk drivers off the road,” said Genoa Police Chief Randy Hill. “We want everyone to play it safe and always designate a sober driver or find a different way home if they have been out drinking.”

According to NHTSA data, nearly 13,000 people were killed in highway crashes involving an impaired driver or motorcycle operator with an illegal blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

Coalition scanning ads
While the police are watching for drunk drivers, the Prevention Partnership Coalition of Sandusky County is conducting a scan of alcohol and tobacco advertising among liquor permit holders.

During August, the coalition is observing local alcohol retail outlets to gather information on advertising and product placement.

Coalition members are taking note of exterior signs, advertisements, and information listing the minimum age for purchasing alcohol and tobacco products.

“We will incorporate what we learn into all of our strategies and continue to work with law enforcement to identify ways to prevent underage alcohol use,” said Stacey Gibson, coalition coordinator

She said the coalition continuously works on new public service announcements and campaigns to educate parents, youth and community members in the area on the hazards associated with underage drinking and other risky behaviors, and on what they can do to stop it.

The Prevention Partnership Coalition operates under the auspices of the Sandusky County Health Department.

Levy canvass meeting
The Ottawa County Board of Elections will meet Aug. 25 to conduct the official canvass of the Aug. 4 special election in the Woodmore School District in which voters approved a levy issue.

The canvass will begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a regular board meeting.

The board office is located at 8444 W. State Route 163, Oak Harbor.

Sewer meeting
The Village of Woodville will hold a public meeting Sept. 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. to update residents on the sewer separation project.

The meeting will be held at the fire station, 321 E. Main Street.

Representatives of Poggemeyer Design Group will be at the meeting.

Road projects
The Wood County commissioners have awarded a contract to Miller Brothers Construction, Archbold, for $698,849 for improvements to Tracy Road in Lake and Perrysburg townships.

The project includes reconstruction and widening of the intersection at State Route 795. November 30 is the anticipated completion date.

Miller’s bid was about $235,530 under the engineering estimate.

The commissioners also awarded contracts for improvements to Roachton Road.

Lake and legislature
About 100 members of the state legislature and other state officials participated in the Lake Erie Shores &  Islands Legislative Days

State Senator Mark Wagoner and State Representative Dennis Murray hosted the two-day event that showcased the region’s travel and tourism industry.

Murray called Lake Erie, “Ohio’s  greatest natural resource” and said it and its shoreline are significant drivers of the local economy.

“Legislative Days highlighted the linkage between obtaining both present and future returns on these assets because the Lake Erie of the 1970s produced few tourists or fish while the Lake Erie of 2009 yields a bountiful harvest of both. It was important for key decision makers from around the state to learn about Lake Erie’s past success as well as looming and emerging challenges.”

B-C-S board meeting
The next regular meeting of the Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education will be Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at the board office, 11685 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.
