Schedel property annexation to be discussed
The Ottawa County commissioners have agreed to hold a discussion Aug. 4 on a petition to annex 36.1 acres  where the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens sit in Harris Township to the Village of Elmore.

Rick Claar, a member of village council, said council last week approved a survey map of the acreage to be annexed.

He said the village has extended sewer lines to the site and the annexation is linked to the agreement to provide the utility service.

In other business, the commissioners last week agreed to amend a contract between the county department of  job and family services and the Ottawa County Transportation Agency and add another $30,000 because of a higher demand than originally planned.

Drug report released
Prescription drug abuse continues to be more entrenched in communities across Ohio, while cocaine and methamphetamine use has waned slightly. Those findings are included in the latest 80-page “Surveillance of Drug Trends in the State of Ohio” report by the Ohio Substance Abuse Monitoring (OSAM) Network - a research partnership of the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS),  Wright State University, and the University of Akron.

OSAM provides information on drug trends across the state of Ohio largely by interviewing active and recovering drug users, treatment professionals, law enforcement officers and crime lab personnel.  OSAM's findings are published twice yearly in comprehensive reports and are available on the ODADAS Web site.

The report summarizes data collected from June 2008 to January 2009 by regional epidemiologists in the Athens, Akron/Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown areas.

Military family appreciation
A bill sponsored by State Representative Peter Ujvagi (D-Toledo) to designate August as “Ohio Military Family Month” was signed into law last week by Gov. Ted Strickland.

“Despite the challenges of two wars and numerous other engagements around the globe, America’s military is stronger than ever. Our military is strong because our state stands behind them. Whether they are your neighbors, friends, or family members, all make life-changing sacrifices, and all are worthy of our eternal thanks,” Ujvagi said.

Principal hired
The Woodmore school board has approved a one-year contract with Randy Pawlowski to be the elementary school principal.

The board has scheduled a regular meeting for July 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school multi-purpose room.
