• Robert L. Cousino, 25, of Oak Harbor, was indicted on two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Assault, both felonies of the fifth degree. Zoo to seek levy Lucas County voters will be asked to show their support for the Toledo Zoo this fall when the current levy, at .85 mills, goes up for renewal.
The Lucas County Citizens Review Committee recommended the zoo’s levy proposal to the Lucas County Commissioners, who on July 19 unanimously approved the request to add the proposal to the November ballot.
The levy will cost the owner of a home assessed at $100,000 $2.16 per month – a renewal of the current level of support. This is not a new tax.
The operating levy helps pay for day-to-day expenses at the zoo, such as food for the animals, veterinary care, utilities and maintenance.
Even with an approved levy, rising costs will require increased Zoo admission and membership fees next year, according to Executive Director Dr. Anne Baker. “However, in recognition of Lucas County residents’ historic levy support of the Zoo, they will pay lower admission fees than non-Lucas County residents and we will continue to offer free Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and two free appreciation weekends,” she added.
Couple rescued Ottawa County Police safely rescued an elderly couple from their vehicle, which had been fully submerged at Fenwick Marina, SR 2, Oak Harbor, on July 21.
At 11:48 a.m., the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a cell phone call from a female indicating that she and her husband were trapped in their vehicle underwater at the marina. Dispatchers were able to obtain enough information on the location where the vehicle entered the water and dispatched officers.
Upon arrival at 12 p.m., Deputy James Hanney observed the vehicle fully submerged, except for a rear corner partially out of the water away from land. He, along with Carroll Township Police Chief Jody Hatfield, entered the water to rescue the victims, who were turned over to emergency medical services for treatment.
“The quick response by these officers to enter the water without regard for their own safety to locate the vehicle and rescue this couple clearly saved lives today,” said Ottawa County Sheriff Robert Bratton. “They are an outstanding example of our county law enforcement professionals.”
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
