Volunteers needed Because of the ongoing dry conditions, Oregon Tree Commission is seeking volunteers to help with watering street trees – those trees located between the sidewalk and road. The trees most in need are small, one to three inches in diameter, and those that have been planted less than three years ago. Trees generally need five gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter plus an extra five gallons weekly. For example, a two-inch diameter tree needs 15 gallons of water per week. A slow and thorough watering is best to allow water to soak down into the soil, according to Don Charlton, Tree Commission chairperson. The commission suggests drilling two small holes in a five-gallon bucket and allowing water to drain into the soil next to the tree trunk. A two- to three-inch layer of mulch around the trunk will help retain the moisture. For more information or to report any special problems with street trees, contact the Oregon Department of Streets at 419-698-7016. Unless substantial rainfall occurs within the immediate future, tree watering will be necessary until mid- or late fall, Charlton said.
