“Fix-a-Bull” Program
The Lucas County Dog Warden has been awarded a grant from PetSmart Charities® and will partner with Humane Ohio to spay or neuter 500 Pit Bulls for $5 each.

The program also includes a microchip designed to help reunite lost dogs with their owners.

To qualify for the program, dogs must live in the city of Toledo and have a current 2011 dog license. To schedule an appointment, pit bull owners can call Humane Ohio’s low-cost spay/neuter clinic at 419-266-5607 and mention the Fix-a-Bull program. Owners must provide both proof of residency and dog license at time of the spay/neuter surgery. Dog licenses are not available for purchase at Humane Ohio; they can be purchased in advance of the spay/neuter appointment at the Lucas County Dog Warden, as well as at many locations throughout the county. Bike MS fundraiser
Ride your bicycle for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the Bike MS Put-in-Bay Mini-Ride Put-in-Bay May 14.

The island course offers riders great views of Lake Erie as they wind around the outskirts of the island, along downtown waterfront, past Perry’s Monument, then to the south end of the island. One lap is approximately 8.5 miles. Riders may choose to do up to five laps. A luncheon served at the Niagara Event Center on Concord Avenue is included in the price of registration, which is $60 per person through May 9.

Register, login or create an account at National MS Society website at main.nationalmsociety.org/BikePutInBay and click “Buy Tickets.” Riders may also register between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. on the day of the ride at the top of the Miller Ferry Lime Kiln Dock, Put-in-Bay.

Drug drop-off set
Oregon Community and Family Coalition (OCFC) and the Oregon Police Department will host a Community Medication Drop-off April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City of Oregon Complex, 5330 Seaman Rd., Oregon.

Unused, unwanted or expired medications will be collected for proper disposal. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse, according to Dave Bensch, executive director of OCFC.

The event in Oregon is part of a nationwide Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) prescription drug “take-back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft. Collection sites in other communities can be found by going to www.dea.gov.

Springtime tea
Friends, family, residents and staff of Otterbein Portage Valley invite members of the community to the Annual Ladies Tea April 30 from 2 to 4 p.m.

In addition to tea served in vintage style, Chef Reggie and team will offer a selection of warm-weather finger sandwiches and desserts.

There will also be  a guest speaker from the American Cancer Society and a skit presented by local writer and play director, Sharon Moenter.

The suggested donation is $6. RSVPs are required by calling 419-833-7000. Proceeds raised from the event will benefit Relay for Life’s “Celebrating One Birthday at a Time.”


“Spelling Bee” on stage
Oregon Community Theatre will present, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” April 29 and 30 and May 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. and May 1 at 3 p.m. in the Fassett Middle School auditorium, 3025 Starr Ave., Oregon.

The musical tells the hilarious story of six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. The youths learn that winning isn’t everything and losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

Safe-T-City
The Toledo Police Department is accepting applications for the 2011 summer Safe-T-City program, a free safety program open to children who are entering kindergarten in the fall.

Four eight-day sessions will be offered: June 15 to 24; June 27 to July 8 (no classes July 1 and 4); July 11 to July 20 and July 25 to Aug. 3.

Parents/guardians may choose morning or afternoon classes. Applications are available at www.ToledoPolice.com or at the Safety Building, 525 N. Erie St., Toledo.


Honor Flight fundraiser
Area residents are invited to enjoy a day of golf and entertainment in support of Honor Flight Northwest Ohio as Owens Community College presents the Honor Flight Northwest Ohio Golf Outing Saturday, May 14.

Organized by the Owens Leadership Academy group Team Commodores, the golf outing will be held at the Fallen Timbers Fairways in Waterville. It will feature 18-holes of golf, lunch, dinner, door prizes and on-course competitions.

All event proceeds will benefit Honor Flight Northwest Ohio, which is dedicated to sending veterans of Northwest Ohio to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built and dedicated in their honor. Founded in 2007, the organization has safely flown over 460 veterans to Washington D.C.

The four-person golf scramble competition will begin with a shotgun start at noon. Registration and lunch will precede the golf at 11 a.m. The day will conclude with dinner at 5 p.m.

Individuals, businesses and organizations are invited to support the outing by entering a team and/or becoming a sponsor. The entry fee is $60 per player or $240 per team. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a disposable camera, which will be given to veterans to use on their trip to Washington D.C.

Indictments returned
Three local men have been indicted for their roles in the theft and possession of a snowmobile from Oak Harbor in February.

James R. Beckhusen, 18, of 14046 Third St., Oak Harbor, has been indicted on one count each of Breaking and Entering and Theft, both felonies of the fifth degree, along with one misdemeanor count of Attempted Theft; Kyle T. Michael, also 18, of 3589 S. SR 19, Oak Harbor, was indicted on one count of Complicity to Commit Theft, a felony of the fifth degree; and Kyle Wolf, 19, of 3136 W. Harbor Rd., Port Clinton, was indicted on one count of Receiving Stolen Property, a felony of the fifth degree.

According to reports of the Oak Harbor Police Department and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Michael allegedly assisted Beckhusen in the theft of a snowmobile from an Oak Harbor residence Feb. 2. Investigating officers found the snowmobile on Feb. 8 in Wolfe’s possessions.

The grand jury also indicted Wade E. Minto, 38, of Canton, Robert DeLeon, 44, of Toledo, and Martin L. Elrod, 29, of Oak Harbor with multiple counts of Criminal Nonsupport for allegedly failing to pay court-ordered child support for their minor dependents.

Minto is facing two counts, both felonies of the fifth degree. Elrod is charged with six counts, all felonies of the fifth degree. DeLeon, who has previously been convicted of felony non-support charges, was indicted on six counts, two being felonies of the fifth degree and four being felonies of the fourth degree.

All are scheduled to make their initial appearances in the Ottawa County Court of Common Pleas May 5.


Fundraiser set
A benefit fundraiser will be held May 1 for 5-year-old Madison Williams, of Perrysburg, who has Juvenile Dermaloyositis, or JMD.

JMD is a rear autoimmune disease that can cause muscle weakness, severe fatigue, rashes, digestive and swallowing problems, lung and heart problems and other medical difficulties. There is no cure.

The fundraiser will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. at VFW Post 2984, 102 W. Andrus Rd., Northwood. It will include a spaghetti dinner, music, raffles a bake sale and more. The donation is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds raised will help defray medical bills. 

Donations may also be made in Madison’s name at any Fifth Third Bank branch.


Surplus sale
Area residents in need of furniture and equipment ranging from desks and chairs to light poles and a greenhouse are invited Owens Community College’s community Surplus Asset Sale April 30 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the High Bay Complex on the Toledo-area Campus in Perrysburg Township.

More than 3,000 items will be available for purchase at various prices, including light poles, commercial sinks, overhead cranes, a portable wall system, desks, chairs, tack boards, televisions, furniture panels, electrical panels, exercise equipment, tablet student chairs, files, shop benches, wood furniture, systems furniture, cork boards, sofa units, tables, modular furniture, hospital beds, bookcases, cabinets, stainless steel sinks, computer printers, vehicles, tractors, lawn care equipment, a walk-in cooler and a greenhouse, among other equipment.

All purchased items must be picked up at the sale’s conclusion. Parking will be available adjacent to the High Bay Complex. Payment methods will include money, check and credit card.
