Helping teachers
In an effort to assist the Lake Local School District teachers, members of the Rossford Association of Classroom Teachers and the Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local #384, as well as other educational associations from as far away as Dayton, raised $5,000.

The money was given to the Lake Teachers Association to distribute to teachers to replace personal materials (or otherwise, as they saw fit) that were lost in the tornado this past summer.

Indicted
The Ottawa County Grand Jury recently returned indictments against the following individuals, according to Prosecuting Attorney Mark Mulligan:

Gary Wayne Myers, 45, whose last known address is Lockwood Road, Port Clinton, has been indicted on two counts each of pandering obscenity involving a minor and pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor, all felonies of the second and fourth degree. According to the Ottawa County Sherriff’s office, Myers allegedly had images on his computer of minors engaging in sexual activity between 2004 and 2009.

Catharine A. Jackson, 60, 32 N. Leutz Rd., Oak Harbor has been charged with two counts of Robbery, a felony of the second degree and felony of the third degree. According to police reports, Jackson allegedly stole items from a Portage Township business on Sept. 15. When an employee confronted Jackson, she fled in her car, reportedly knocking the employee to the ground.

Kenen N. Everett, 18, of 9258 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor, has been indicted on one count of failure to appear, a felony of the fourth degree, after he allegedly failed to attend a hearing in the Ottawa County Municipal Court Aug. 25 after being released on a recognizance bond.

Paul Sedilko, 40, of 1500 N. Forest Dr., Sandusky, and Susan M. Lambert, 47, of 1400 Mill St., Apt. 1, Fremont, have both been indicted on felony charges of criminal nonsupport for failing to pay court-ordered child support. Sedilko was charged with six counts; Lambert has been charged with four counts.

Terry L. Schmeltz, Jr., 41, of Main Street, Oak Harbor, was indicted on six counts of criminal nonsupport after he allegedly failed to pay court-ordered child support for his minor dependent from April 2004 through March 2010. The charges are felonies of the fourth degree and specify that Schmeltz has been previously convicted of felony nonsupport charges.

Warrants have been issued for Myers, Jackson, and Everett. Mulligan noted that an indictment is merely a formal charge in the Common Pleas Court and does not denote guilt or innocence.

Course to begin
Area residents who may be interested in water plant operation jobs can join a 16-week water operator’s course beginning in November. An exact date is still to be determined.

Participants in the course will receive a Level 1 Water Operator’s certificate at the end of the program, which will be conducted by the Operator Training Committee of Ohio Inc. (OTCO). Internships are a required part of the course and will be conducted at area water treatment facilities.

Classes will be held at the Ottawa County Resource Center, SR 163, Oak Harbor and will run Monday to Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

According to Curtis Truss Jr., executive director of the Operator Training Committee of Ohio, “water treatment is a field that is stable and that is an in-demand occupation.”

The ideal participant of this program is someone who has a strong interest in hands-on applications, but who may be facing barriers such as being involved in the court system or who may have dropped out of school. Other requirements of this training program include a desire to learn, an interest in technology, and most importantly a strong work ethic.

The training is made possible by a partnership of WSOS Community Action Commission Inc., the Operator Training Committee of Ohio and the Ottawa County Improvement Corporation.

WSOS will provide supportive services to help the participants through any transition issues that may arise during the participant’s time in the program. In addition, students enrolled may be eligible to receive stipends while attending classes.

Those interested in securing a seat in this water operator’s should call Fisher at WSOS at 1-800-775-9767 or e-mail WSOS at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
