The annual Sandusky County Area College Fair will be held Oct. 4 at Terra Community College. From 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Student Activities Center, representatives from more than 70 colleges and universities from Ohio and other states will be on hand to answer questions about majors, athletics, student activities, financial aid, housing costs and career opportunities.
There will also be a financial aid workshop at 6 p.m. in B-101. Terra’s Financial Aid staff will provide information and literature and answer questions about financial aid.

Flu clinics set The Sandusky County Health Department has announced the dates and times of seasonal flu vaccination clinics for county residents.
The influenza vaccine is now recommended for ages 6 months and older. There will be no H1N1 clinics this year, as the vaccine is now included in the seasonal flu vaccination.
The cost of the vaccine is $20. Medicare and Medicaid will be accepted; cards should be brought to the clinic.
Individuals attending the clinics should dress in layers, with short sleeves available for ease of vaccination; there will be no privacy.
Scheduled clinics include: Oct. 13: 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Sandusky County Fairgrounds, Flower Building; Oct. 15: 1-3 p.m., Gibsonburg at Faith United Methodist Church; Oct. 20: 1-3 p.m., Clyde Senior Center; Oct. 21: 1-3 p.m., Woodville Senior Center; Nov. 1, 8 and 15: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Health Department.
The Health Department expects that adequate amounts of vaccine will be available this year, and encourages those attending not to arrive early. Doors will open only as scheduled.
Terra grand opening A Grand Opening/Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the new Skilled Trades Center at Terra Community College will be held Oct. 8.
Guests, including elected officials, current and former trustees, local employers and alumni will join Terra staff, students and faculty for the ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m.
There will also be a public reception and tours of the building – the first new building on the Terra campus in more than 10 years.
The building is home to the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), welding and power technologies labs and the Terra Truck Driving Academy. There are also faculty and staff offices, five classrooms – four with Smart Board technology – and a student lounge.

Marine mechanics class A new Marine Mechanics Skills for Life class is scheduled to begin Nov. 8. The program is currently enrolling up to 16 participants for the class.
Orientation/informational meetings will be held Oct. 6 and 14 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ottawa County Resource Center, SR 163, Oak Harbor.
Supported by several local marinas, the classes are conducted at the Ottawa County Resource Centre in Oak Harbor Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The 16-week program is offered to the community through a collaborative effort of the Ottawa County Community Improvement Corporation, Penta Career Center and WSOS Community Action Commission, Inc.
The class provides students with program instruction and hands-on training in the proper use of all tools used in the marine mechanic industry. Participants also receive a work ethics certification and boating education certification provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Watercraft Division.
It designed as an open entry and open exit hands-on program that allows participants to master the skills of the marine trade in less than six months.
Participants who complete the program requirements will be qualified to work at any marina around the nation. Also, some graduating students earn scholarships to complete an advanced marine mechanic class at the Penta Volvo training center, an internationally known marine engine manufacturer with a location in Ottawa County.

Library storytimes The Harris-Elmore Public Library will welcome guest storyteller Jeannie Giesler, of Diversified Insurance Services, during preschool storytimes Oct. 8 and 22, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10 and 17 at 10:30 a.m.
The storytimes, which will last about 30 minutes, will be followed by a snack.
The library did not host storytimes from September 2009 through May 2010 due to cuts in state funding. The storytimes are part of a community outreach program offered by Diversified Insurance Services. For more information, call 419-862-2482.
Women’s Connection All area women are invited to attend a “Festive Colorful Fashion Style Show” luncheon and program sponsored by the Toledo East Women’s Connection Oct. 14 at the Bayside Boardwalk, 2759 Seaman St., Oregon.
Doors open at 11:45 a.m. for the noon luncheon. The program will include a style show featuring models from Betty Hill’s Change of Seasons consignment shop in Perrysburg. In addition, Linda Conti, of Toledo will provide vocal musical entertainment and Judith Barlow, from Strongsville, Ohio, will talk about a “Busy Person Who Found Inner Peace.”

Early voting site The Lucas County Board of Elections has opened an Early Voting Site at 1301 Washington St. (corner of Washington and 13th), Toledo.
Hours for early voting are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed Columbus Day Oct. 11); Saturdays Oct. 23 and 30, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sundays Oct. 24 and Oct. 31, noon to 4 p.m.; and Monday Nov. 1, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Innovation award An interactive mapping program developed by Ohio EPA to help Ohioans become familiar with local waterways is one of four projects recently selected to receive a State Program Innovation Award at the national 2010 Environmental Council of States (ECOS) annual meeting.
The maps, available online at www.epa.ohio.gov/dsw/gis/index.aspx, are built atop Google Maps, an interface familiar to many users.
Maps can be loaded for a base, roadmap-type view, a terrain view or an imagery view from a satellite photo. Ohio EPA plans to continue adding to the system, incorporating more data.
Targeted programs include tracking for storm water permits and water quality certifications, progress on watershed cleanup plans and enforcement activities and locations.
Holiday outreach set The Lake Township Firebelles will conduct the 29th annual “Operation: Feeding Our Neighbors” program to provide township families in need with holiday baskets with food, clothing and toys.
