The 2010 Ohio Polio Network Conference will be held Oct. 16 at Toscora Park in New Philadelphia, Ohio. The conference, a gathering of those who have had polio and may be affected by Post-Polio Syndrome, is open to the general public.
Keynote speaker Dr. William DeMayo, medical director of the specialty clinic at J.P. Murtha Neuroscience & Pain Institute in Johnstown, Pa., will discuss “Best Practice Medical Care: Implications for Polio Survivors.”

“Mutte Carlo” set The Toledo Humane Society’s 2010 Fur Ball, will be held Oct. 2 at the Pinnacle in Maumee.
Funds raised at the event, “A Night in Mutte Carlo,” will support the humane society’s mission, which is to relieve the suffering of, prevent cruelty to and provide for humane treatment of animals.
The evening will include dining stations, a silent and live auction and entertainment. Guests will receive “fun money” chips for playing at what organizers promise to be the best gambling tables this side of the Monte Carlo. Republican Club raffle The Northern Wood County Republican Club (NWCRC) will staff a booth during Perrysburg’s Harrison Rally Day festival, which will be held Sept. 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As in the past, campaign signs and literature will be available from GOP candidates for national, state and Wood County offices at the booth, located in front of Mills Pro Hardware.
The NWCRC will also hold a raffle for two signed copies of GOP gubernatorial candidate John Kasich’s book “Every Other Monday: Twenty Years of Life, Lunch, Faith and Friendship” and one signed copy of “Stand for Something: The Battle for America’s Soul.” Raffle sales will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the winners announced at 4 p.m. All raffle proceeds will be donated to Lake High School.

Penta Parent Night Penta Career Center will hold the Annual Parent Night Sept. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. The school is located at 9301 Buck Rd. in Perrysburg Township.
Beginning at 6:15 p.m., parents will follow their student’s first semester schedule. From 7:15 to 8 p.m., they will have the opportunity to meet their son/daughter’s second semester teachers.
Before the event, parents, guardians, family members and students are invited to a sub sandwich dinner in the Commons Area from 5 to 6 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $4 per person. Also during the evening, visitors can purchase items from the Penta Bookstore and obtain information about ordering the 2011 Penta Yearbook.

Banned Book Week What do Maya Angelou’s “I Know why the Caged Bird Sings,” Chris Crutcher’s “Deadline,” Anne Frank’s “Diary of a Young Girl” and Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” series have in common?
These and other titles were all banned or challenged in 2009 and 2010.
In observance of “Banned Books Week” Sept. 27 through Oct. 3, the Harris-Elmore Public Library will feature a display of banned or challenged books. In addition, the library’s adult book discussion group will read “Looking for Alaska,” by John Green, which has also been challenged a number of times. The discussion will be held Sept. 30 at 10:30 a.m. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk.

Fall Plant Sale Members of Owens Community College’s Landscape and Turfgrass Crew Club will hold their annual Fall Plant Sale Sept. 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the greenhouse, located near the entrance to the Math/Science Center on the school’s Perrysburg Township campus.
The sale will feature a wide selection of shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses and rare and unusual trees, among other items. Indicted After a recent session of the Ottawa County Grand Jury, indictments were returned against the following individuals, according to Prosecuting Attorney Mark Mulligan:
• Kevin W. Dickens, 23, currently being held in the Ottawa County Detention Facility, indicted on Vandalism, Breaking and Entering and Theft, all felonies of the fifth degree. According to reports of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Dickens entered an Erie Township business earlier this month, taking money and dozens of packs of cigarettes.
• Shella Marquez, 260 Fremont St., Elmore, charged with one count of Failure to Comply, a felony of the third degree, along with misdemeanor counts of OVI and Child Endangering after she allegedly led deputies of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office on a high-speed chase July 9.
• Tammi A. Pettaway, 38, whose last known address is Oregon, Ohio, was charged with one count each of Theft and Forgery, both felonies of the fifth degree, along with an additional misdemeanor count of Theft. Pettaway is accused of cashing stolen checks at a Genoa bank last month.
• Christopher L. Fincher, Jr., of Toledo, has been charged with one count of Carrying Concealed Weapons, a felony of the fourth degree, along with misdemeanor counts of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, Driving Under Suspension and Marked Lanes Violations. According to reports of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Finscher, 25, was allegedly found in possession of a loaded handgun when deputies stopped him for traffic violations Aug. 18.
• Mark W. Haeft, 50, of Williston, was indicted on felony counts of Drug Trafficking and Drug Possession, along with misdemeanor counts of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia after he was reportedly found in possession of Fentanyl during a traffic stop by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office earlier this month.
Summonses have been issued for Marquez, Fincher and Haeft. All are scheduled to make their initial appearances in the Ottawa County Court of Common Pleas on Sept. 27.
Mulligan notes that an indictment is merely a formal charge in the Common Pleas Court and does not denote guilt or innocence.
Supply drive under way Owens Community College students are conducting an Educational Resource Supply Drive to benefit the Wood County District Public Library’s mission and to help raise awareness about the many benefits of the nation’s public libraries.
The drive is being coordinated by the college’s Raising Awareness and Environmental clubs and will run through Sept. 30, in conjunction with Library Card Sign-Up Month.
Items being collected include new or gently used adult and children’s books, DVDs, VHS tapes and books on tape. Donations may be dropped off in the library in the Audio/Visual Classroom Center, the College Hall Bookstore and the Office of Student Activities in the Student Health and Activities Center.
All donations will be given to the Wood County District Public Library in Bowling Green.

Teed off against cancer St. Paul UCC Voll-unteers of Oak Harbor will host their 3rd Annual Relay for Life four-person golf scramble Oct. 2 at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Elmore.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The best ball scramble is open to the public with prizes awarded for the best men’s team, women’s team and mixed team.
Golfers can start off with a sausage & egg sandwich at the turn and finish the day with a hamburger, hot dog or brat, along with accompaniments and desserts provided by church members.
The $50 per person fee includes golf, a cart, door prizes and food. Skins, mulligans, betting holes, putting contest, 50/50 and other prize holes will be available. Proceeds will support the Ottawa County Relay for Life.

Grants awarded The Board of Trustees of Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. recently approved grants totaling $139,000 from the Fran and Dick Anderson Community Support Fund to 17 area non-profit organizations.
The fund was established in late 2009 for the sole purpose of supporting the operations of charitable organizations that may be suffering from the recent economic downturn or other special circumstances. The recent disbursements are the third round this year, for a total of $527,000.
Among the recipients are the Catholic Club and Imagination Station, which received $10,000 and Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio, which received $15,000.

Owens holding auditions Area residents interested in performing in the upcoming student production of the “Almost, Maine” are invited to open theatre auditions at Owens Community College Sept. 27 and 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Studio Theatre Room 111.
Callback auditions will be held Sept. 29. Those auditioning are encouraged to prepare a monologue as part of the audition or a monologue will be provided for them.
Written by John Cariani, “Almost, Maine” tells the story about a cold, moonless night in the middle of winter and how all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. Production dates are Nov. 18-21.

Groove in the Grove The Clay High School Alumni & Friends Association will present the 14th Annual Groove in the Gove and Hall of Fame Induction Oct. 2 from 6 p.m. to midnight at Oak Shade Grove.
This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include Betty Carstensen (posthumous) and Judge Jeffery B. Keller.
Dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Hall of Fame induction will be held at 7:45 p.m. in the Pavilion. Dancing will follow in the cheesehouse.
