“Suds & Salvation” Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Portage Inn will present the return of “Suds & Salvation,” a series of open conversations on a variety of topics concerning faith and theology.
The first gathering for this third season is set for June 15 at 7 p.m. at The Portage Inn in Elmore.
“Suds and Salvation is not a new idea,” said the Rev. David Nevergall, pastor at Grace. “The Roman Catholic Church has been doing it for years under the title “Theology on Tap,” primarily as a way of getting young adults together. Our approach is a bit different. We’re opening this up to the entire community, focusing on issues that folks of all ages are wondering about.”
The topic for the first gathering is “Scandalized by Grace,” a discussion focusing on God’s expansive mercy. Pr. Nevergall will open the discussion with a brief overview on the topic, and then the floor will be open to questions and answers.
The bar and the kitchen will be open for anyone who would like to accompany the conversation with a bit of food and drink.
Topics and future dates include “Consumer vs. Culture” (why the way of faith often conflicts with the ways of the world, June 29); “What’s Worship For” (a consideration of what we do in worship and why, July 13); “For All the Saints” (a look at the nature of sainthood and our place within it, July 20); “A Priest and a Minister Walk Into a Bar” (Catholics and Protestants together, with special guest Fr. Jim Peiffer, Aug. 10); and “Open Forum: Grill the Pastor” (Aug. 24). “I’ll probably need my dancing shoes for that last one,” Nevergall said.
For more information on the series or directions to the Portage Inn, call Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 419-862-3630 or e-mail
