Indicted
After a recent session of the Ottawa County Grand Jury, indictments have been returned against the following individuals Prosecuting Attorney Mark Mulligan reports:

• Michael D. Lawson, also known as Michael Lawson, Jr., 35, of 910 N. Toussaint South Rd., Oak Harbor, has been indicted on four counts of Criminal Non-support, all felonies of the fifth degree, after he reportedly failed to pay court-ordered child support for his minor dependants from January 2007 through December 2008.

• Kyle T. Burdge, 22, whose last known address is 4884 N. Genoa-Clay Center Rd., Curtice, was charged with one count of Failure to Appear, a felony of the fourth degree, after he allegedly failed to attend a hearing on another indictment last April.

• Lonnie J. Clere, 44, who is currently being held in the Ottawa County Detention Facility, has been indicted on felony charges of Vandalism and Escape, along with misdemeanor charges OVI, Failure to Submit to Chemical Test and Resisting Arrest. Clere was arrested by officers of the Elmore Police Department earlier this month and was being transported to the Detention Facility when he broke out the window of a police cruiser and fled from the vehicle. Officers were able to detain Clere, who was then incarcerated.

Warrants have been issued for Burdge and Clere. Lawson has been scheduled to make his initial appearance in the Ottawa County Court of Common Pleas on June 3.

An indictment is merely a formal charge in the Common Pleas Court and does not denote guilt or innocence, Mulligan noted.

Honoring those who serve
Two events are slated in the coming week to honor those who have defended our country in observance of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.

On May 26 at 6 p.m., there will be a Memorial Day salute to armed forces veterans, police, fire, and EMS, at the Buffalo Wild Wings, 3555 Navarre Ave.,  Oregon.

The event is being held in conjunction with an open motorcycle bike rally. Hundreds of bikers, including members of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Club, Leathernecks M/C, Amvets Riders, and members of the Christian Motorcycle Association, Blue Knights, Harley Owners Group Riders, American Legion Riders, and non-affiliated riders will be attending.

A prize package for round-trip passes on the Miller’s Ferry to Put-In-Bay, and a free night at the Islander Hotel on South Bass Island, along with V.I.P. events passes for Bike Week at the Bay June 9-13 will be awarded to someone attending the rally.

The bike rally and salute to veterans is open to the general public. There is no admission charge. Music will be provided by a DJ. Bikers interested in supporting the Keith Dressel Memorial Ride in June can pre-register at the rally. The Dressel Memorial Ride is held annually to fund an academic scholarship in memory of the Toledo Police detective who was killed in the line-of-duty in February of 2007.

Veterans and public service officials are asked to wear their service colors.

On May 30 at Clay High School’s Memorial Stadium in Oregon, there will be a Memorial Day Observance at 1 p.m., at the site of the war memorials there. The 45-minute ceremony is being coordinated with the American Legion, VFW and Vietnam Veterans of America groups, along with other local veteran’s organizations.

A flyover, which could include up to three planes, is planned. In addition, the names of the members of the U.S. Armed Forces from Oregon and Jerusalem Township who died during their military service will be read. All veterans are asked to attend the ceremony to pay their respects to those who have given their all. More information is available at www.oregonareaveterans.com.
