Otter Creek Road and the York Street intersection will be closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. on Monday, May 17, to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 28, to allow for the construction of the Otter Creek Road Improvement Project. The signed detour route for Otter Creek Road will be Corduroy Road, Lallendorf Road, Cedar Point Road. The signed detour route for York Street will be Wheeling Street, Consaul Street/Corduroy Road, Lallendorf Road.
`No Father’s Day’ This coming June, when people around the country are celebrating Father’s Day, Humane Ohio - a non-profit organization that operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and pet food bank - will be doing just the opposite. The group has planned a “No Father’s Day” promotion and will neuter male cats during the month of June for a special rate of $20 in an effort to prevent unwanted litters. Cat owners who wish to take advantage of the offer must mention the “No Father’s Day” promotion when they call to schedule their appointment.

Memorial Day observance Pemberville American Legion Freedom Post 183 will observe Memorial Day with a parade that will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the town hall with a gun salute provided by the post color guard. The Eastwood Marching Band will perform the National Anthem. The program will continue in the Legion Hall at 10 a.m. The guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Sara Deal Burrow, an Eastwood High School graduate who became the first female Marine to be selected for Naval aviation training. In 1993, she became the Marine Corp’s first female aviator. Deal completed her active duty in 2004 and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve. In May 2006, she was assigned to HMH-769 where she served as a reserve CH-53E pilot. She and her husband Phillip M. Burrow, a former Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot who now flies for United Airlines, are the parents of three boys. Grants awarded Three local non-profits were among 26 organizations that will share $352,000 in grants awarded by the Toledo Community Foundation. From the Fran and Dick Anderson Community Support Fund, established in 2009 to support the operations of charitable organizations that may be suffering from the recent economic downturn or other special circumstances, Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo received $30,000; Boyer-Riverfront, Inc., received $5,000; and Little Sisters of the Poor received $5,000. The foundation is a public charitable organization founded in 1973 by citizens in the community to enrich quality of life for local individuals and families.
Board vacancies open The Board of Lucas County Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill upcoming vacancies on the Lucas County Citizens Levy Review Committee. The vacancies are in the senior citizen, business and public sector categories. The nine-person committee is charged with providing a thorough review of all levies and making recommendations to the commissioners before levies are placed on the ballot. Any person interested in being considered for a specific appointed board vacancy must complete an application for public volunteer form, available from the county commissioners’ office at One Government Center, Suite 800, Toledo, or by calling 419-213-4500. A detailed resume must be enclosed with the completed form. Applications will be accepted through the end of the business day May 21.
Republican Club to meet The Northern Wood County Republican Club (NWCRC) will meet May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 10621 Fremont Pike, Perrysburg. Guest speaker will be Dr. William Zouhary, who will discuss the Tea Party movement in Ohio and the U.S. Doors will open at 7 p.m., with a brief monthly meeting and presentations to follow beginning at 7:30 p.m. The club meets the fourth Monday of every other month at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express. Senior recognition Penta Career Center will recognize high school seniors who will be completing career-technical programs May 25, 26 and May 27 in the Susor Auditorium at the school, located at 9301 Buck Rd. in Perrysburg Township. Each student will receive a Career Passport, which contains their personalized Certificate of Completion. In addition, seniors will be recognized for career-technical student organization accomplishments and other school-related achievements. One of the highlights of each ceremony is the announcement of the recipients of the Outstanding Student Award for each career-technical program.
Brush pick up Lake Township Road Department will hold a spring brush pick-up May 17 through 21 for the areas west of I-280 and May 24 through 28 for the areas east of I-280. Brush must be in place by 7:30 a.m. the first day of the week of the scheduled pick-up. The collection is for chippable brush only. Brush should be stacked as neatly as possible and placed at the road edge with the butt ends of all ranches facing in the same direction. Garbage, yard waste and objects other than brush and limbs will not be picked up. Free wood chips will be available at the road department on Ayers Road. Call 419-836-1143 for more information.
Ash tree program On Monday May 24, at the start of Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week, OSU Extension will hold a program to discuss the topic of replacement options for ash trees that have had to be removed. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Ballville Recreation Hall, 1413 W. Cole Rd., Fremont. Amy Stone, Extension Educator, OSU Extension, Lucas County will be the featured speaker.
