Program helps avoid high bank fees, check cashing outlets A new program, “Bank On Toledo,” is designed to help Toledo area residents gain access to low-fee checking accounts at banks and credit unions, while decreasing dependence on check cashing outlets that often charge high fees, according to a news release.
“Bank On Toledo” is a collaborative effort involving the City of Toledo, United Way of Greater Toledo, area financial institutions and various community partners. This community-wide initiative is focused on assisting the “under-banked” and “unbanked” populations in obtaining access to financial services.
“Bank On Toledo” participating financial institutions throughout the City of Toledo, Oregon and Northwood include: Charter One, Directions Credit Union, Fifth Third Bank, FirstMerit Bank, Huntington, KeyBank, Nueva Esparanza Credit Union, PNC Bank, The State Bank and Trust Co., Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union, and Great Lakes Credit Union.
Once an individual visits a participating “Bank On Toledo” financial institution, he/she will be assisted in opening a checking and/or savings account, learn the proper use of credit cards, and become informed about home ownership and more. Additionally, financial education classes focusing on budgeting, managing a checking account, improving one’s credit rating, paying off debt and saving for the future are available through the “Bank On Toledo” program.
