The Eastern Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for its 18th annual Prism Awards, which honors excellence in this area’s businesses and organizations. The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 18. The award categories include:
• General Excellence Award given to businesses of any size based on excellent performance;
• Pioneer Award recognizes companies that have been leaders in their industry and in operation for at least 20 years;
• Horizon Award recognizes companies that have exhibited great potential for success. The award is presented to businesses in operation for five years or less;
• Community Improvement Award recognizes community based non-profits and volunteer organizations;
• Best Practice Award – Businesses, both large and small, are eligible for this award which recognizes the successful result of a specific campaign;
• Person of the Year – the purpose of this award is to identify, honor and reinforce the activities of exceptional caring citizens whose service or performance positively contributes to the quality of life in the Eastern Maumee Bay region.

Schools & skills The Lucas County Workforce Development Agency and The Source Small Business Resource Committee have planned a strategy meeting for organizations providing programs and services to small business. Titled “Focus 2011 – Job Creation through Entrepreneurship” the event will take place at The Source, 1301 Monroe Street, Toledo on Wednesday, February 2 from 9 to 11 am. The Source Small Business Resource Committee is a public-private partnership made up of business owners, training providers and government agencies and coordinates a series of workshops and activities for small businesses. The bottom line First Defiance Financial Corp, parent company of First Federal Bank, announced last week that net income for the fiscal year ending December 31 totaled $8.1 million, or 75 cents per diluted common share compared to $7.2 million or 63 cents per diluted common share for the year ended December 31, 2009. For the fourth quarter ending December 31, First Defiance earned $2.3 million or 22 cents per diluted common share compared to $555,000 or one cent per diluted common share for the fourth quarter of 2009. Net interest income for 2010 totaled $70.2 million, a $2.8 million or 4.2 percent increase over 2009. Average interest-earning assets increased to $1.836 billion for 2010 compared to $1.822 billion in 2009. The provision for loan losses for 2010 was $23.2 million, which was even with the $23.2 million in 2009. First Federal has local offices in Genoa and Oregon.
