Press wins two news awards at state contest

The Press won two first place awards in a recent statewide contest held by the Ohio Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ).

Larry Limpf, news editor, won a first in Best Public Records Use for his series of stories concerning the Village of Gibsonburg. The stories detailed Police Chief’s Michael Benton’s investigation into real estate transactions, questionable billing and possible conflicts of interest by elected and appointed officials including a former village solicitor and the administrator.

Second place went to Cleveland Magazine.

Kelly Kaczala, news editor, Pat Eaken, reporter, and Melissa Burden, a freelance writer, won a first place in the Best Government Reporting category for their coverage of controversy involving public officials in Jerusalem Township.

Second place went to Westerville News & Public Opinion.

The Press competed in the category of print publications under 100,000 circulation.

The contest was managed by the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati chapters of SPJ.

Comfort studio
Veh & Son Furniture in Gibsonburg has added a La-Z-Boy Comfort Studio, 4,600 square-feet of retail space dedicated to La-Z-Boy furniture for the family room and living room including recliners, motion sofas, sleep sofas, sectionals and leather upholstery.

“La-Z-Boy furniture has always stood for comfort, and we’re proud to partner with such a well-known furniture brand,” said Matt Kohler, store owner. “The addition of this Comfort Studio demonstrates the long-term commitment we have to offering our customers the best selection of comfortable, quality furnishings available.”

Opportunity knocks
Craig Newman has been named manager of laboratory services at Bay Park Community Hospital, according to a company release. He replaces Sue Bolger, who recently retired from health care after eight years of service at Bay Park.

Newman most recently served as administrator of operations, division of anatomic pathology at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

He and his family reside in Oak Harbor.

Schools & skills
Volunteers are being sought to help lead college students at the University of Toledo through a life-sized game board entitled Finances 101: Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk.

The board game teaches financial responsibility and helps students learn what it costs to run a household and how buying decisions affect earnings.

The event takes place Tuesday, October 20 from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm. Sign up at www.finances101the game.org or call Marybeth Sund at 419-246-5910.
