Perlaky hanging up scissors After nearly 60 years in the hair-cutting business, Louis Perlaky has decided, at the age of 83, to hang up his scissors.
A 1952 graduate of the Toledo Barber College, he first took a job at the Haggerty Bowling Center in Toledo where space was devoted to providing shaves for customers.
Following a two-year stint at Mays Barber Shop, Lou opened his own shop, Perlaky’s Village Barber Shop on Starr Avenue.
After 26 years, he closed that location and built a smaller shop next door at 2626 Starr Ave., where he remained until 1999.
Inside his shop, patrons could grab a soda and help solve the world’s problems with the other customers.
Many of the Birmingham area’s men stopped by the shop to discuss sports and local politics. Youngsters were treated to a lollipop or Bazooka bubble gum.
After closing the shop, Perlaky continued to work part-time, renting a chair at Colonial Barbers in the Freeway Plaza on Navarre Avenue.
Although retired, Lou plans to visit the Little Sisters of the Poor, where he plans to offer haircuts to the residents.
