Genoa man retires after 55 years with company Jim Cornell might well have set a record that will not be broken.
Cornell, of Genoa, retired last week after 55 years at Materion Brush Inc. (formerly Brush Wellman Inc.), ending a career that spanned 11 U.S. presidents.
The early days at the company were a busy time for the young Jim Cornell. He graduated from high school on Friday, he was married on Saturday and he started work the following Monday.

To honor Cornell and his service, the company’s employees held a ceremony that was attended by many leaders from Materion, including Richard Hipple, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer. Also in attendance at the celebration was Cornell’s twin brother Bob, a “short-timer” who retired from Materion after only 40 years.
Cornell’s retirement gifts included a check for $2,000, as well as a plaque and an antique clock. He was also presented with a copy of his original employment application, as well as a form signed by his parents allowing him to work as a minor.
Cornell started in the beryllium metal operations at the former Luckey beryllium plant that had been operated by Brush as a contractor to the U.S. government. He later moved with the company to Elmore, which, in 1957, dedicated new beryllium operations at the Harris Township site. Over the years, he has done many of the jobs in the plant and worked in Quality Assurance for his final years.
His plans for retirement include spending time with his family.
