Eagle Scout honors
John Takas, of Boy Scout Troop 160, Millbury, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

For his project, Takas built outdoor musical instruments including five drums, four chimes and two rainmakers for St. John’s Nurturing Center in Genoa.  He also built a bench around a tree for the kids to sit on when they are outside.

Takas attended St. John’s Nurturing Center for preschool and after-school care as a child, so the project was an opportunity for him to give back to the center, he said.

He spent 59 hours on his service project with a total of 181 hours being spent on the entire project by members of his Boy Scout Troop, family and friends. Merle Mortiz is the Scout Master of the troop.

An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on May 22 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Genoa.

Takas, who was 13 years old when he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, has just completed the eighth grade at Genoa Middle School. He has been involved in Scouting since first grade when he was a Tiger scout.

The son of Kandy Takas, of Millbury, and Jim Takas, of Williston, John is following in the footsteps of his uncle Ray Keller, Jr. who became an Eagle Scout in 1976 with Boy Scout Troop 160.

Helping hands
Seven employees from Medical Mutual of Ohio in Toledo recently offered to help out at the YMCA Child Development Center at Mercy St. Charles Hospital as part of the United Way Days of Caring program.

Fifty Medical Mutual employees signed up to participate in the volunteer effort, offering their time to better the communities in which they live and work.

The volunteers were a big help to the YMCA’s staff according to Bobbie Kehlmeier, Eastern District Child Care and Volunteer Director for the YMCA.

“The biggest importance of having volunteers here is an extra set of hands,” she said. “There is never enough one-on-one time with kids and child care, so it’s great to have Medical Mutual here. The kids love having people from the company come in.”

Sandra Kovach, who works in Medical Mutual’s telecom voice department, volunteered her time at the YMCA Child Development Center at St. Charles as part of the United Way Days of Caring program.
