Outstanding Paul Blausey Farms was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Lake Erie Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) Award at the recent 60th Annual Meeting of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District.
“In the last several years, Chad Gargas of Paul Blausey Farms has done extensive work and has installed or signed up 14 farms for a total of 17 acres of land to be put into filter strips,” said Josh Gerwin, District Conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service. “These filter strips were not only on land that the Blausey’s own, but also property that is rented. Approximately seven more farms will have filter strips installed on owned and rented ground in the upcoming years.
“Paul has not only done an excellent job in slowing runoff into our waterways, but has also set an example to his children and grandchildren about the importance of conservation,” Gerwin said.
CREP is a partnership among producers and state, and federal governments that pays landowners to set aside land into filter strips. It is an offshoot of the country’s largest private-lands environmental improvement program - the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).
