Tour highlights conservation The Conservation Technology Information Center will host its annual Conservation In Action Tour Aug. 8-9.
“This tour will deliver direct interaction with producers finding success with conservation and working to fix the problems,” said CITC Executive Director Karen Scanlon.
On the evening of Aug. 8, participants from more than seven states will relax at a social event in downtown Toledo. At the social, participants will enjoy complimentary food and drink and have the option of a two-hour boat cruise on the Maumee River.
Speakers for Aug. 8 include: • Jeffrey Reutter, Ph.D., representing the Ohio Sea Grant College program discussing features of the Lake;
• Stephen Bales of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers explaining dredging and associated costs and environmental challenges;
• Dr. Thomas Bridgeman, of The University of Toledo, addressing issues related to excess algae in the river and lake;
• Roger Knight, Lake Erie Fisheries program administrator, speaking about economics related to the Port of Toledo, shipping and the value of commerce;
• Joe Cappel, Toledo Port Authority, discussing the port, shipping and the value of commerce;
• Rick Unger, Lake Erie charter boat captain sharing comments on the lake fisheries.
On Aug. 9, participants will tour conservation agriculture solutions at six stops, including The Andersons Inc.; Bridgewater Dairy; Allen Dean’s, a 1,900-acre corn, soybean and cover crop operation; the Mavis Farm, where Gary and Scott Mavis are transitioning to no-till; and Hesterman Farms, where Todd Hesterman will share his experience with the Conservation Action Projection and the Ohio Phosphorous Task Force.
The tour will conclude at the Blue Creek Conservation Area, where participants will learn more at a Conservation Technology Expo and enjoy dinner, at which Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur will be the featured speaker.

OSWCD Ag tour Jump on board and join the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District for a “Lake Erie Ag Tour” Aug. 22. The tour is geared toward the agriculture community, however everyone is welcome to attend and learn more information about Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).
The first tour will visit The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab (Gibraltar Island), where participants will journey out on research boats to learn firsthand about HAB, participate in water quality monitoring and hear featured speaker Jeff Reutter, director of Ohio Sea Grant.
The second tour is “Spouse’s Day at the Bay” and will include a tour of Heineman’s Winery, the Butterfly House and a historic tour of the Island and Perry’s Monument.
The cost is $25 for each tour. Participation is limited to 60 on the Lake Erie Tour and 50 on the Spouse’s Tour. Call Becky Simpson at 419-898-1595 for more details.
