OSWCD lauded The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District was recently awarded the “Education District of the Year” at the Ohio Federation of Conservation District’s meeting in Columbus.
The district received recognition for the “Day on the Wild Side” held in 2010. The educational event, which was held at Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, hosted 38 youth from Ottawa County and surrounding areas.
Participants learned about invasive species, trapping, marsh management, and the importance of habitat. They also had a chance to do various hands-on activities.
The district credited Jeff Finn, Mark Witt, Dennis Clement, John Simpson, Opie Rohrer, Jeff Miller, Fred Zink, Jim Schott, Tom Bartlett, Paul Fleming, Crystal Dymond, Joe Uhinck, Tyler Weaver, Derek Benner, Steve Brent, Tom Kashmer, Kara Schwanger, Adam Saylor, Aaron Philips, and Steve Duniluk, Laura Jones, Tim Baldwin (WildOhio), D’arcy Egan and James Proffitt for helping to make the event a success.
Sponsors of the 2010 event included Delta Waterfowl, Jeff Hayman Excavating of Tiffin, Allied Waste Services, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Zink Calls, Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers Association, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Ohio EPA, Ohio Waterfowl Association and Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife (Step Outside Grant).
4-H fundraiser The youths of Carroll `n Company 4-H Club will host an open house/fundraiser March 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ottawa County Agricultural Complex, 240 W. Lake Street, Oak Harbor.
A number of vendors will be on hand, including Tupperware, Longaberger Baskets, Dove Chocolate Discoveries, Pampered Chef and more.
Cash n carry items will be available or customers may place specialized orders from the vendors. The fundraiser will also include a bake sale.
Proceeds will help purchase items for patients at the Toledo Children’s Hospital.
Ottawa Co. farmer a winner Ottawa County farmer Frank Michel, of Oak Harbor, has been selected as a winner in America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations.
Michel has designated Benton-Carroll-Salem Food Pantry, located in Oak Harbor, to receive the award in Ottawa County. The donations are available through the Monsanto Fund.
The donation was made in a presentation held March 17 at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor.

Seedling sale The Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District is conducting its annual seedling sale.
One- to two-year-old seedlings are being offered to assist landowners in establishing conservation practices such as windbreaks, wildlife habitats and treed riparian buffers. Trees can also be used for general landscaping.
Conifers are available in packets of 25 trees and hardwoods and bushes are available in packets of five. One-ounce packages of “native” prairie seed mix, collected locally from the Oak Openings region, are also available.
