Food Industry Expo
Many may not know that Ohio is home to some of the largest food manufacturers in the United States, with more than 1,000 companies scattered across the state.

On Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) will host representatives from many food-related businesses at the Columbus Marriott Northwest for the Ohio Food Industry Expo – a full day offering companies the opportunity to discover new techniques, learn about innovative trends,\ and identify valuable resources.

The registration fee is $75 per person (cash or check). Call 419-535-6000, ext. 108 or visit www.ciftinnovation.org to register or learn more.

Horticulture Academy
OSU Extension Lucas County will offer a Horticulture Academy for four consecutive Thursdays March 3-24. Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the ABE Center, 639 S. Dunbridge Rd., Bowling Green.

The program will be geared toward employees or owners of small landscape companies, garden center staff, greenhouse staff and others who may be interested in starting their own business in the industry.

A variety of topics will be covered, including botany, soils, turf, pruning and workplace safety, among others.

The class fee is $350 per person, which includes course materials, lunches and snacks. If more than one person will be attending per business, the cost is $300 for the second person.

Murray honored
State Rep. Dennis Murray (D-Sandusky) has been named Ohio Legislator of the Year by the Ohio Farmers Union. The award is presented to legislators that not only support Farmers Union positions, but also advocate on behalf of enhanced quality of life for all Ohioans.

Rep. Murray told the group he was both “honored and humbled” by the award. “Through education of the public and its members, through scholarships, through its interest in lofty issues like renewable energy and down-to-earth issues like soil conservation for its members today and for future generations, the OFU has demonstrated to me that it serves as a true Steward of the Earth,” he said.

The Ohio Farmers Union is a family farm organization representing about 5,000 family farmers across the state.
