Once again, the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District is conducting its 2010 Seedling Tree and Shrub Sale.

The district is offering a variety of assorted trees and shrubs including evergreen and fast-growing varieties. A butterfly wildlife mixture and a native grass packet, are also available, along with Ohio-made butterfly houses.

The district encourages early ordering because supplies are limited, particularly for the fast-growing varieties and Red Oaks. The deadline for ordering is April 1. Seedlings will be ready for pick-up in mid-April.

Seminar
The Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) will host a free seminar titled, “Expanding markets through frozen produce,” Feb. 4 from 10 to 11 a.m.

The seminar is designed to be informative for growers with excess product at the end of the season, an interest in expanding crop selection, or a desire to grow more product if an outlet were to be established should attend.

Representatives from Bon Appétit Management Company and Rebecca A. Singer, vice president and director of agricultural programs at CIFT, will introduce a newly-developed process that will allow growers to freeze produce, yet retain maximum freshness and taste.

Bon Appétit Management Company, a nationwide café and catering service organization with more than 400 locations in 29 states, is seeking local, frozen items to serve to their clients at various corporations, universities and specialty venues.
