The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation, in cooperation with Schedel Arboretum and Gardens, Erie-Ottawa-Sandusky Pheasants Forever chapter and Naturally Native Nursery, will present a pair of rain garden workshop Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Schedel, located in Elmore.

Participants will learn how to create landscaping areas that will help drain water after a storm and how to create rain gardens.

The cost to attend the workshop is $12, payable in advance. Attendees will receive handouts and will have time to stroll through the gardens. Class size is limited to 50. For reservations or more information, call Crystal Dymond at 419-898-1595.

Special election set
The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District will hold a special election for District Board of Supervisors in conjunction with the District’s 58th Annual Banquet and Meeting Sept. 30 at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds.

Tickets for the BBQ chicken or pork chop meal may be purchased at the SWCD office at 240 W. Lake Street, Unit B, Oak Harbor.

One board member will be elected to a three-year term of office. Candidates in this year’s election include Richard Thorbahn, of Oak Harbor, and Connie Sandwisch, of Graytown. Ballots may be cast at the banquet or by Sept. 29 at the Ottawa SWCD Office, 240 W. Lake St., Oak Harbor, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Voting will begin at 5:45 p.m. at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds and continue until 6:45 p.m.

Ottawa SWCD is a legal subdivision of state government that provides natural resource management assistance to county landowners and other units of local government. The district is funded by the Ottawa County Commissioners and county funds are supplemented by funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The district is governed by a five-member board of county residents who serve staggered three-year terms.
