Cody Witt overcomes the odds to excel athletically

The Witt family held 3.1-mile walk-a-thons for many years, up until Cody was a freshman in high school.

The walkers would dress in orange-colored shirts with the words “Cody’s Grizzlies” emblazoned across the front. Their goal: to raise money to help find a cure for diabetes.

Fast forward from more than 12 years ago, when Cody Witt, now the only senior on the Lake boys basketball team, was diagnosed with Type 1 (then known as juvenile) diabetes. Witt, 17, walked into the Lake gym on Senior Night and saw a sea of orange T-shirts with “Cody’s Grizzlies” written across the front.

It’s been a long time coming for the Oak Harbor Rockets.

Despite having a good program in place for the better part of the last 15 years, Oak Harbor girls basketball had not won a sectional title since 2003.

That ended when the Rockets defeated league foe Margaretta, 59-31, in the Division III sectional final at Port Clinton High School.

Star forward Andrea Cecil led the way with 28 points as she used her athleticism to elude the Polar Bear defense and score at will. Fourteen of her points came in the first half when Oak Harbor took control and built a 34-18 lead heading into the half.

Broadcasters often say a great team finds a way to win even when it does not play well. That often means grinding out a victory when pushed to the limit.

Genoa’s found a way in their 56-47 victory over rival Woodmore in the Division III girls’ sectional final last weekend was a prime example of that.

It is the second consecutive sectional crown for the Comets and third in Coach Mike DeStazio’s four years at the helm. It’s the program’s seventh in the last 10 years.
