First-year Oak Harbor football coach Mike May doesn't have Eastwood's game plan in his back pocket, but he pretty much knows what to expect when his Rockets host the Eagles on Sept. 5.
May was an assistant coach at Elmwood in 1996-97 and 1999, when the Royals and Eagles squared off for Suburban Lakes League supremacy.

"That was a huge rivalry and still is," May said.

Justin Thomas makes big move to Triple A Tacoma

Former Clay and Youngstown State pitching standout Justin Thomas is one step closer to the Major Leagues. One baseball writer expects him to be pitching with the Seattle Mariners by the end of the season.

The 24-year-old 6’3, 220 pound Thomas has been promoted by the Seattle Mariners from the Double A West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx (Southern League) to the Triple A Tacoma Rainiers (Pacific Coast League). In five games in relief at Tacoma, he has a 1-1 record, 5.40 ERA, 14 strikeouts, and seven walks in relief.

Coach: Mike May, first year, 0-0.
Last Year: 8-3 (6-1 Sandusky Bay Conference).

Forecast: May has the task of keeping the Rockets rolling after coach Gary Quisno, who is now at Sandusky Perkins, led the program to a 224-83 record in 29 years. Oak Harbor, which lost in the first round of the playoffs to Marion Pleasant last fall, made eight playoff appearances under Quisno.

"There's an old saying in football that you never want to follow a legend, but I saw it as an advantage," May said. "He left the program in such great shape. Everything was intact coming in. He and his staff did such a great job over the years. The kids already knew how to work hard and they are used to discipline and have been fundamentally sound over the years. There are a lot of advantages to following coach Quisno."
