Many familiar faces will return in what should be another exciting summer of Toledo Mud Hens baseball. The Hens are coming off their 4th straight winning season, the longest streak in Mud Hen History since 1941-1944. They are 533-470 since moving to Fifth Third Field.

The core players on the Hens parent club, the Detroit Tigers, have stayed the same, so the Hens will once again be stocked with talent when the Hens open at home Thursday.

Starting pitching will be the key to the season. The Hens have a new crop of hurlers and will need some guys to step up.

Chris Lambert, 26, will anchor the rotation following a 12-8 record for Toledo in 2008. Lambert joined the Hens from St. Louis in the 2007 deal for LHP Mike Maroth.

Ron Chiavacci, 31, returns after spending last season with the Phillies and Astros Triple-A clubs.  Chiavacci went 12-6 for the 2007 Mud Hens and finished 4th in the league that season with 126 strikeouts.

GENOA SOFTBALL
Tom Kontak enters his seventh season as Genoa softball coach with two Suburban Lakes League championships, a district and regional championship, and a state final four appearance under his belt.

Last season, the Comets were 17-8 overall and runner-up in the SLL with a 9-5 record. This year it is the Elmwood Royals who are picked to win the SLL.

“The coaches in the league have made Elmwood the clear favorite, and I think deserving so based on their run to state last year,” Kontak said.

“They are on top ‘till someone knocks them off,” Kontak continues. “Eastwood and Gibsonburg are loaded with talent as is Woodmore. The rest of us are figuring out our identities and who we are.”
