Kyle Gunn wins three events as Rangers finish 2nd

Senior Kyle Gunn won three events as the Northwood boys were runner-up at the Toledo Area Athletic Conference track meet last week, following Toledo Christian (187) with 129½) points.

Following the Rangers were Ottawa Hills (101), Cardinal Stritch (51), Maumee Valley (16½), Danbury (11), and Emmanuel Christian (3).

Gunn won the 100 (11.2), 200 (22.4), and high jump (6-2). Other Northwood winners were the 4x200 relay team of sophomore Seth Dunbar, senior Chris Keith, senior Spencer Guerrero, and junior Brad Minkowski (1:34.8); Chris Keith, 400 (51.7);  Spencer Guerrero, 300 hurdles (41.9); and junior Andrew Pietras, discus (136-5).

 
Lake starting pitching becomes dominant force

Greg Wilker will be the first to tell you that this isn't nearly the best defensive team he's had in 25 years as Lake High School's baseball coach.

He doesn't have a hulking, overpowering pitcher, either.

What Wilker and the Flyers do have, however, are three of the best hurlers in the Suburban Lakes League in juniors Ryan Hotmer and Brandon Maze and sophomore Casey Witt.

Hotmer, who was 3-2 with a 1.63 ERA last season, is considered the staff ace.

"He's a bigger kid, so he throws the hardest out of the group and he has the best breaking ball," Wilker said. "He's been nicked up all year because of injuries. He's thrown in our toughest games."

 
Kuns planning to play baseball for Bowling Green

Clay senior Drew Kuns spent five hours on the Bowling Green State University campus, and he was hooked.

"I could tell from my visit, that's where I wanted to be," Kuns said.

Later that day, on May 13, the Eagles' three-sport star gave BGSU baseball coach Danny Schmitz a verbal agreement to play for the Falcons.

"I just felt the coaches (at BG) were amazing," he said. "They have a great history of winning and it was a place I wanted to be, because I wanted to win.
