No boys team from Eastwood High School has ever won a state championship, and track coach Gary White isn't about to dance around the fact that his Eagles have that opportunity this weekend.

"I've been honest with the kids," White said. "We didn't talk about it all year until Monday. That's when we laid it all out. It was in the back of their minds. We showed them every event and what needs to be done. If they do those things, it's a possibility and that's all we can ask for.

Northwood senior athlete Kyle Gunn is competing in three events during the weekend’s state track and field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

“Number 1, he’s really fast and he’s quick,” Northwood football coach Ken James said of his 5-10, 160-pound senior quarterback last fall.

No one questions Gunn’s speed or athleticism. One of three events Gunn is competing in at state is a field event — the high jump. His second event is the 110 meter hurdles.

Gunn is also part of the Northwood 4x200 relay team that also includes sophomore Seth Dunbar, senior Spencer Guerrero, senior Chris Keith, and Gunn.

Northern Lakes League commissioner Larry Morrison said the league will vote this Tuesday to “tenatively” accept either Clay or Napoleon.

The NLL is making the move to stay at eight teams after the Rossford school board approved a resolution to leave the NLL and join a new league being formed with Eastwood, Lake, Genoa, Otsego, and Woodmore. The changes would not take effect until the 2011-12 school year and both the NLL and the Suburban Lakes League would remain intact for the next two school years.
