The National Amateur Baseball Federation College Division World Series presented by Buckeye Cable Sports Network will return to Toledo August 6-9. Sixteen teams from across the country will qualify through regional tournaments and direct bids for the 31-game wood bat tournament.

Two teams will receive direct bids from the Toledo Amateur Baseball Federation, which has eight teams this year. Two of the teams represent the Oregon-based Ohio Monarchs (Gold and Blue teams), which also play in the Tri-State Baseball League (Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania), and a third team playing Fed ball this season is the Ohio Trojans, which were the 2007 Continental Amateur Baseball Association College World Series champion.

Last Monday evening the best senior high school football players from the Sandusky Bay Conference and the Suburban Lakes League met in another all-star showdown at Clyde’s Bob Bishop Field.

Last year the SLL won in a close game, but the SBC holds a 9 to 7 lead in the series.

This year’s game was again very competitive with 13 first downs by each team and only 20 yards difference in total yards, but the SLL failed to repeat as champs in an 18-14 loss to the SBC.

On Tuesday, the Northern Lakes League voted in favor of adding Napoleon as its eighth member beginning in 2011-12, instead of Clay. Napoleon replaces Rossford, which is leaving to join a new league.

“The big decision is made,” NLL commissioner Larry Morrison said. “There are going to be a couple major changes.

“I’ve talked to the Clay people and they knew what was happening and that one (school) was going to be disappointed,” Morrison added. “Well, I think they are in a livable situation where Napoleon really had a hard time with their league. From that standpoint, it’s probably best that it worked out that way.”
