The Oregon-based Ohio Monarchs Gold summer collegiate team was 31-11

through Monday and is tied for first place in the TABF and in the Tri-State League.

The Gold team will try to defend its 2008 College World Series championship at this year’s LineDrive Sportz National Amateur Baseball Federation College World Series presented by Buckeye Cable Sports Network August 6-9.

Coach Ed Mouch's squad will be without the services of Curtice native Ben Kauder during the World Series. Kauder, a 5-11, 165-pound right-handed pitcher/outfielder, underwent Tommy John elbow surgery last Wednesday.

Was it luck or just the law of averages that caught up with Thomas Schmeltz last

month at Hidden Hills Golf Club in Woodville?

The 18-year-old from Pemberville, who played on the golf and baseball teams at Eastwood High School before graduating last spring, has been playing lots of golf this summer.

"Probably five times a week," Schmeltz said. "Mostly at Hidden Hills, but we've gone to Tanglewood and we've gone down to Hillcrest in Findlay and at Detwiler in Toledo."

On July 21, Schmeltz grabbed his 7-iron and stepped up to the 18th tee at Hidden Hills. His target was 150 yards away.

Lucas Apel is the youngest of Jeff and Esmeralda Apel's five children. He's also

the most famous.

When Lucas, now 14, was 11 years old his father took him bow hunting for whitetail deer in Ohio and Michigan. Jeff Apel took a few cameras with him, and over the course of three years the footage of Lucas' outdoors experience was made into a DVD devoted to youths entitled “The Journey Begins.”

"I'm a bowhunter and my son, Lucas, when he was 11, asked if I would start taking him hunting," Apel said. "That was when the idea struck us that we could use his experiences as he begins his outdoor adventures as a way to chronicle his time outdoors and use that as the basis for the production."
The DVD was produced by Jeff and Esmeralda's new production company, Straight Arrow Productions LLC. The company's motto is “Share the Passion • Share the Adventure.”
