Genoa’s golf team is competing in the state golf meet at North Star Resort Course in Sunbury over the weekend.

Coach Tom Pickerel and the Comet golfers left Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m. for a practice round.

“Obviously it's a very exciting time for Genoa golf,” Pickerel said. “We have had a great season.”
“What better way to top it off than to play in the state finals. I am so excited for a great group of seniors. They have worked extremely hard over their four years to get to this point. It is very gratifying to see all their hard work pay off.”

This year the Division II state finals are at the North Star Resort Course and not at Ohio State University’s Scarlet course. Division III and Division II switch every other year playing the Scarlet. This is D-III’s year to play the Scarlet Course.

Oregon volleyball player setting records at Ohio U.
Oregon native Ellen Herman knocked down 11 kills to become Ohio University’s all-time kills leader en route to helping the Bobcat volleyball team to a 14-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-12 victory over Buffalo on the road.

The win was the Bobcats' fourth-straight Mid-American Conference win. Herman surpassed former Ohio standout Melissa Griffin (2004-07) in the second set with a big kill to help the Green and White gain the momentum it would need the rest of the way.

Herman was the 2008 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year. While in high school at Central Catholic, she was rated the 43rd top recruit in the nation by and was the first Fighting Irish player to receive all-state honors twice.

It has been a season of continued success for the Lake golf team.

For the third time in four years since Terry Tansel took over as head coach, the team qualified for the district tournament by finishing third at sectionals. Prior to Tansel’s first year, the golf team hadn’t made districts since 1986.

“We’re really headed in the right direction with the program in general,” Tansel said. “Our lowest score since I’ve been a coach was at the league meet two weeks ago where we shot a 325.”

It all starts with practice, and Tansel said the team tries to mix it up and keep things interesting each day.

“One day we’ll play nine holes, the next day we’ll go to the driving range, or we’ll work on chipping and putting,” he said.

It is during chipping and putting where Tansel said he mixes it up more.
